Quick Questions…

QQ: Do RAFAC encourage any nominations for this? I can’t recall ever seeing anything noting this award, which comes with postnominals.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen anything.

What would be useful would be a list of national/regional external “awarding bodies”we could go to with similar aims. I can think of a Number who would be within a good chance of being recognised by these type of things but to be honest got no idea what organisations might exists that we could nominate to beyond internal certificates and the state honours system.

Does anyone have any cadets that are listed as supernumerary on SMS with them, or have their cadets listed as supernumerary with other squadrons? If so, how did you do this?

Does the “owning” squadron get the subs bill for them? They don’t get charged twice by the different wings I’m assuming?

Yes ‘owning’ unit gets the subs. They also have to issue uniform. (Assuming both units are ATC, CCF makes it rather more complex)

We’re not billed for supernumeraries by Wing but I’m not sure if that is the case everywhere.

How did you actually do the transfer? I can’t see any option on SMS or VP to do this, despite there being a category for listing cadets there. And are there any issues you’ve encountered?

I can’t see the emails as I’ve changed roles since we last had one but I am pretty sure we had to get CS at the RHQ to do it

QQ: Anyone studied with the OU before? Considering it myself for my masters, but would love to hear from people with experience of them first.

My Missus is a lecturer - drop me a message if you want

So is mine :grinning:

Apparently the staff are kind supportive efficient and knowledgable

And I’m hoping she’ll let go of the arm lock now

Just wanting to check that it’s entirely own-paced studied?

I’m confident enough in my ability to complete the degree, but obviously have a bit of an unknown around career commitments right now.

Also weighing up between OU and Birkbeck.

I’m interested in an OU course, thinking something A-Level, as never went to college.

A means to an end and hit and miss. I’ve done a few things with them, and I’m starting my final year for my latest in October. With science, the tutors were helpful. With law, I’ve found the tutors to be unhelpful and send you away with little answered.

There are fixed deadlines to submit coursework within each module, but you can study towards them at your own pace.

A lot does come down to the actual degree and modules, in terms of workload, but there’s no fixed number of credits you have to earn each year.

So after having a good think I’ve decided to put in an application for Birkbeck - specifically for their MSc Global Political Economy.

I think the OU could be great, but I’m also needing to consider how well recognised institutions are outside of the UK due to my choice of career, and UoL is definitely more recognisable. I’m also drawn to how much easier it would be to mix with classmates on a Birkbeck course, making networking within the sector much simpler.

I never completed my A-Levels either, but was able to secure my BA place through work experience alone, eventually graduating with a First. I know that the OU also don’t ask for specific qualifications for most of their Bachelors courses.

My mum has just brought me my great-grandfather’s medals out of nowhere - I didn’t know we had them.

Am I right in thinking that the medals and the ribbons have become mixed up at some point in history?

yes i would agree

there is a British War Medal and WWI Victory Medal shown looking at the ribbons, but the medal hanging off them looked to be swapped

Absolutely they have.
