Proteus camp Nottinghamshire - anyone remember?

Can I never want remember the greens camp, Proteus, that was the Edwinstow in Nottinghamshire?

I was in Trent Wing so this was our annual greens camp. It was great because there was no real limitation and any cadet from any squad seem to be able to go if they wanted.

Staying in old TA billets, spend 90% of your time in greens what running around woods. Assault course. Shooting range. Rope bridges. Glory days

Anyone do anything similar?

Ahhh, the ‘spider’ accomodation blocks with moss on the inside of the walls and asbestos roofs. Those were the days! It was a nice little range there down in a hollow. My wing went there for years, for a week at Easter until it was closed down.

Cadets on the squadron I helped out on in the 80s scrambled to get there names down for Proteus Camp. Getting cadets to want to go to annual Easter or Summer camps was a challenge though. Especially, when same stations started coming up more often.

A different Wing back in the day but very similar camp. I think each Wing probably did their own version. Ours was at Sennybridge.

We did something similar at Leek Training Camp in Staffs.

SERE 175 January 1982, cold and living in Nissan huts for four days…shudders.

Our wing had a 4 day camp there in 1995.

My memories of the place:
Ants in the cook house
Brown (hopefully) cam cream smeared all over the walls of the nissen hut I was sleeping in.
The first time I met with the word “Ablutions”.
The entire camp being sent into the training area to look for a cadet who had been lost on the night exercise.
Sunbathing by the range
PT by the Dutch barns

I absolutely loved it.

Spending several weeks here during the miners strike in 1984/85. My overriding memory was getting the coal/coke heater in the hut to glow red with heat. It was very cold that winter.

The first time I would have gone was probably about 1998?!

I volunteered for guard duty. Little did I know that was a 12 hour night shift… Although of course you did sleep most of it.

The next few times I went to the camp I volunteered for kitchen duty with the rest of my flight because that was just a clearing up after lunch and dinner!

Glory days

(I wonder if the organisation has some form of greens camp nowadays… All seems to be Astra or school based)

Most wings and regions are doing some form of Military Skills Camp.

I know North, LaSER and SW have them…

I think there’s a good increase in military skills stuff with the intro of the new FT PTS.

Calling NRSW a Mil skills week is ambitious if you’re not in the Gold/Gold + course…

twas mostly waiting around and marching from what i remember

actually that is a a mil skill

Id be interested to see a MEL for the camp.

Just interested with what they do.

All of the groups from Blue-Gold did some form of fieldcraft that week.

I’m aware, But from my experience, it was half a day basics even for a silver flight.

granted I didn’t go in 2024 so it might have improved
