Can I never want remember the greens camp, Proteus, that was the Edwinstow in Nottinghamshire?
I was in Trent Wing so this was our annual greens camp. It was great because there was no real limitation and any cadet from any squad seem to be able to go if they wanted.
Staying in old TA billets, spend 90% of your time in greens what running around woods. Assault course. Shooting range. Rope bridges. Glory days
Ahhh, the âspiderâ accomodation blocks with moss on the inside of the walls and asbestos roofs. Those were the days! It was a nice little range there down in a hollow. My wing went there for years, for a week at Easter until it was closed down.
Cadets on the squadron I helped out on in the 80s scrambled to get there names down for Proteus Camp. Getting cadets to want to go to annual Easter or Summer camps was a challenge though. Especially, when same stations started coming up more often.
My memories of the place:
Ants in the cook house
Brown (hopefully) cam cream smeared all over the walls of the nissen hut I was sleeping in.
The first time I met with the word âAblutionsâ.
The entire camp being sent into the training area to look for a cadet who had been lost on the night exercise.
Sunbathing by the range
PT by the Dutch barns
Spending several weeks here during the miners strike in 1984/85. My overriding memory was getting the coal/coke heater in the hut to glow red with heat. It was very cold that winter.
