Presentation

Right so I’ve been tasked to do a 5 minuet presentation ( part of a selection process for getting promoted on my squadron ) we have to do it on a topic from first class I was thinking about navigation as I was a scout and I know the topic well but if anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it If you told me them

I wouldn’t get too hung up on the subject - just ensure that you’re well-prepared, know your content and present confidently.

I guess you mean a lesson? 5 minutes is a bit harsh so you really need to focus on a particular aspect of navigation that you can easily summarise. You should pitch it with an assumption of your audience having no prior knowledge.

If I was delivering something in 5 minutes, it would run like this:

  • Introduce the topic (one sentence)
  • Explain the need (one sentence)
  • Give an objective (one sentence - the goal of the presentation)
  • Teach to a tight focus
  • Summarise in one sentence, referring to the objective
  • Invite questions

There’s very little you can really do in 5 minutes, so…

  • Relax
  • Speak clearly at a regular pace
  • Don’t rush
  • Make eye contact
  • Use your personality

There’s far too much possible detail to try to cover, but those are the basics. Presenting is something that takes practice and repetition to master, so at this level don’t expect to be perfect. Your goal is to show that you can speak to and engage with an audience. It’s nothing you haven’t done before!

Go get 'em.
