Pause on use of CLPW & CPOW (Private Weapons)

Fresh off the press any thoughts? Bit frustrating as ours are currently being serviced….

New IBN relating to LPWs.

In short, not permitted to use on MOD ranges.

Does this affect private gun clubs?

MOD ranges

This is, I hope, a short term (like a week long) pause. I’m not sure I can face another ban on another activity.

All that’s left to complete this summer of discontent is for SW Region to extend their ban on fun and we’ll have a bingo.

Can we please have a translation of the MLAs for the uninitiated?

CLPW - cadet locally procured weapons
CPOW - cadet privately owned weapon

A lot of private rifle clubs use MoD ranges.

Add into that CCF school ranges where the range is maintained by the MoD but owned by the school (so it has a 906 but it’s used by civvies)

So our local .22 range at a school CCF has a 906.

It has a number of civilian clubs using it but does this mean we can’t use our anschultz during Sqn activity but we can as a member of the club?

Often these sort of policy are aimed at centre fire weapons which can vary considerably. It’s then applied to rimfire because the military doesn’t really deal with rim fire now.

There was the whole thing about using service ammo in private weapons when for .22RF it’s exactly the same ammo from Eley

Centre fire you start getting into the world of home loads etc.

Reading the IBN it looks like a policy gap has been identified so it’s just closing that aspect.

If it’s a small gap, it makes sense. My worry is it’s just a lead in to a ban.

Better than the “sludge” that used to be the issue .22" ammo.

I note that the IBN refers to CPOW - what about CFAVOW? :smiling_imp:

I think that the service .22 used to be reject Eley Club, until even Eley decided that it was to bad to try to sell, so we ended up having relabled ‘Club’

This your first Pause is it???

I think we used to use it at my first unit. I only recall one misfire in 6 years.

And we definitely didn’t try firing it again at the end of the night to avoid having to store it separately, and it definitely didn’t work…

The SECR is an old bit of work and I suspect the newer NSPLW piece will simply replace it.

Hoping this is a short pause while a bit of staff work is done by someone to make sure everything aligns.

For the avoidance of doubt:

This latest IBN doesn’t affect private clubs. Private clubs do not use CLPWs or CPOWs.

An IBN allowed the use of MOD ammo in CLPW/ CPOWs but private ammo cannot be used in MOD firearms.

RAFAC members (cadets, CFAVS, etc) are not permitted to fire ‘home loads’ under the SSoT, all ammunition must be MOD supply or ‘factory’.

Moving on…

So, rapid progress is now being made towards independent club setup and HO approval. A cadet themed target club that operates outside the control of RAFAC utilising both MOD and civilian ranges will significantly improve the amount of LFMT we are able to offer to our members. OK so we can’t fire the plastic fantastic but that’s not a marksmanship firearm anyway (awaiting the onslaught).

The problem I found with Eley Club was the consistency in the fall of shot, rather than misfires (which I have had more than the one which you suffered). For several years, I regulary shot NSRA 10 bull at 25m and 50m where that consistency was critical, and not a problem with the Lapua Olympic that I ended up using.

Just seen the updated ACF policy on this change and it doesn’t look a million miles from what is already in the SECR so units should be pretty quick to be able to comply. Suspect our policy will be similar but with some wording changes to suit our single service processes.
