Parade Query

Just a quick one, as it doesn’t appear to be covered in 818 - officer on parade, dismiss, in civvies. Obviously no salute, but do the cadets march straight off, or wait until such time as any salute would have been carried out, and then march off?

Thanks.

If only the Officer is not in uniform, why not salute?

If no one is in uniform, why have the parade? I have, if at all, on these occasions, the parade as such “in the round” for notices with no formal dismissal. Only really happens on the last parade of the year as we have a social at the squadron.
To give it a degree of formality if you so wish, the Officer says “carry on x”, wallks off the parade and senior NCO present dismisses the squadron. A well versed practice when dignitaries are present.
Like so many things sometimes you have to wing it and I doubt anyone will care.

Although I can see the question getting the pencils twitching in some hands.

I would say it depends. There obviously won’t be a set protocol as RAF wouldn’t really parade in civvies. If the officer is in uniform the salute should still be returned by the officer even if no cadet salutes by hand.

If there will be no saluting, why not just give a simple “Dismiss”?

Sorry, probably should have made it clearer: it was a social night at the Sqn, everybody was in civvies. Obviously we still retain the initial and final parades, and the OC was there (again, in civvies). Not having final parade just because it’s a social night is a bit silly (still an official parade night). To my mind it then just makes it like a youth club & some discipline is lost.

Half the cadets marched straight off & the other half waited, paused for the length of time it would have taken to do a salute, then marched off (I think. Bit difficult to see when they’re all behind me).

Maybe I should have asked what do others do in this situation if there is no protocol? Because I want them to do the same thing, not different things and it helps if I can reference anything in case of arguments.

in my experience carry on as if in uniform (minus the saluting as appropriate obviously!)

if a Cadet turns up in civis for what ever reason they carry on, joining with everyone else. why would that be different for “the boss”?

for sports nights etc it is how we do it. usual parade, but with no saluting.

Thanks Steve.

But what I was after is, do your cadets, after being told ‘officer on parade, dismiss’ incline & March straight off, or incline & pause for the length of time it takes to do a salute, then March off?

If nobody is in uniform then there really isn’t any point in standing still during ‘salute time’ before marching off.
That said, if they do then it’s not a big deal.
It’s a judgement call. I think personally I’d have them march straight off, or I’d have the officer disappear first and then dismiss them to avoid any confusion.

if there is a salute because someone is uniform yes…otherwise no

We have ours wait, the usual example for this happening is when someone has forgotten their uniform and can’t salute. It would be a bit odd (and difficult) to march forwards if everyone around them was saluting.

Even if we’re all in non uniform, we all pause. Ensures consistency when one or two aren’t in uniform but the rest are (no bumping in to each other) and means we’re not teaching them 2 different timings for the same command.
