Before I go any further, this topic is not for turning into a religous bashing of any faiths.
I was reading this BBC News article
Pope’s interview comments
and several things got me thinking.
Most importantly, how can this comments regarding women priests not be in violation of EU law?
" “But with regards to the ordination of women, the Church has spoken and says no… That door is closed.”"
If this policy is not sexual discrimination then what is?

I can guarantee this thread will bash religion. How can’t it?
The last thread involving religion ended up with me receiving more bad karma than the Thurston Sqn Civ Com chairman.
The Vatican isn’t part of the EU.
Edit to add: HM Armed Forces doesn’t allow women to serve in the infantry.
is there a clause regarding “membership”?
in much the same way the smoking ban indoors does not apply if a membership only club (and thus not a “public” place) has voted for it
other “rules” can be ignored for “clubs”/“societies” on the basis of “membership”
the Mason’s for instance is a male only organisation and the WI a female one…is this not the same discrimination?

Let’s not tar freemasonry with that brush:
http://www.owf.org.uk/
Female masons aren’t considered “Regular” masons by actual freemasons. If found doing anyhting masonic with them you are chucked out.
However, there is nothing that prevents females being employed by UGLE or in masonic halls etc.
At some point the Catholic Church will eventually ordain women as they will need “bums on seats” running their churches.
In our own church we’ve had 2 women one vicar, one curate in the last 15 years and I can’t say I’ve noticed any difference between them and men. Although the curate was quite easy on the eye! When the notion of making women Bishops came up last year it was the lay members of the General Synod who weren’t in favour while the ordained members were. Personally I’m ambivalent, as long as they do the job and don’t get on some feminist hobby horse and bang on about being a woman doing a man’s job blah, blah, blah.
As for whether or not it is infringes some EU law, who cares? Anything that upsets the EU’s self-serving bureaucrats gets a tick from me. However the Catholic Church is a worldwide ‘club-like’ organisation and to that end doesn’t have to worry too much what “local” poliicians thinks about it’s policies and working practices, it’s the membership that call the tune to a large extent.

either way they are both single sex organisations which discriminate against the other sex…

Err, did you not look at my link above? There are loads of women’s lodges. Check your facts.
yes i did, but a woman’s lodge is still a female only lodge…weather or not a lodge is male or female it is single sex and thus discriminates against the other
my post was not to question the “legality” of male/female masons but to indicate as a collective organisation they are single sex organisations and thus discriminate against the other…thus weather or not we talk about freemasons (male or female), the WI, the RBL Women’s section these are all single sex groups which by definition will discriminate against the other sex…

I take your point. But both are completely different from the Catholic Church. They at least have equivalent memberships for men and women, women can join the British legion, and be freemasons. But no woman can be a catholic priest. As there is no women’s section of the catholic church.
