(OPERATION SNOW RIDER) RAF No. 41 Squadron testing typhoons in icy conditions in Finland

The No. 41 Squadron based in RAF Coningsby have been testing the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4s in icy conditions, sending them over to Finland,

The event hosted by the Finnish Air Force Academy invited the 41 Squadron to test their skills in winter operations, pushing and testing the Typhoon. Hard packed snow, icy runways and temperatures which were often below freezing, made conditions even more demanding.

Flight Lieutenant Louis King, 41 TES Operations Officer said:

“With the Finnish air being so dry, we had to create our own reduced friction surfaces by spraying water and letting it freeze. The Airfield Maintenance team would then drive their friction reader down the runway to get an accurate surface friction until we had obtained the correct conditions to test.”

Air Marshal Alan Marshall, the RAF Air and Space Commander said:

“Returning to Finland to work with our Finnish Air Force colleagues is always highly rewarding and valuable. They are adept and well-versed in the agile employment of air assets, particularly in cold weather conditions. Exercise SNOW RIDER has been a great success and once again demonstrated our capability to operate in all environments.”

Seems Operation Snow Rider has been pretty successful in terms of operating the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4s in more demanding climates.

What are your thoughts on this?

Think the planes the wrong colour & they should go for proper artic camo.

Well, I mean there’s probably not going to be a point as it’s just a training exercise, it’s be pretty useless to paint typhoons for one operation, and then painting them back afterwards, as they aren’t staying out there.

Going back to the old RAFG concept of dispersed road based operations. TAVEVAL will
be startling next. The Scandinavian and Polish air forces have never stopped doing this.
