Nijmegen 2013

Evening chaps, trust you’re all making the most of the weather.

On Friday we’re embarking on our noble steed (a 17-seater and a trailer no less) to the city of Nijmegen.

I was just wondering if anyone had any super-duper last minute tips for the week…any places that are worth checking out (primarily watering holes :silly: ), any advice for the walk etc.

S’about it really. I suppose I’ll see some of you on the road, not that you’ll know who I am

Ta-ra.

We’re catching the coach Friday night. (So we’ll be in marginally more comfort :P)

My big tip after a severe listening to the contingent got last year is to take some wash bowls for boot cleaning, after people used the sinks.

Anyone got any first aid kit gems? I’m trying to put the team kit together and need some more inspiration.

Tequila.

Thanks for the washing up bowl tip!

When they shift onto another coach at the far end of the M1 it may be a little more smelly and uncomfortable.

They do have a 26 hour journey ahead of them though, but are carrying significantly more junk than in previous years.

Heard on the grapevine that you ought to take some carpet (?!) and a bedsheet along. Now the carpet may be difficult to procure in the next 7 hours, but I could acquire a bedsheet.

Recommended?

Definitely recommend a bedsheet - between camps they keep the matresses stacked in metal cages, possibly outside, and they get really grotty. Bring plenty of baby-wipes too.

The flooring in the accommodation isn’t too bad but a bit of carpet is nicer to stand on and helps keep feet a bit cleaner.

Seconded, the mattresses are also a bit sticky if it gets absolutely redders. So a bedsheet stops your face sticking to it.

Honestly now, whose silly idea was it to march 160km in 4 days? Proud I did it and got the medal, but I will most certainly will not be returning.

Full credit to the cadets for getting through it, I’m no stranger to tough endurance events but Nijmegen most definitely takes the biscuit. Never again.

Thanks for the advice all the same.

Well done.

Lightweight. It was my first Nijmegen - painful but worth it. A happy young lady (and her grateful parents) on the last leg now has my spare beret too. The second year medal looks so much better…

Good morning,
To all those I saw. Very well done to all who finished. I hope your blisters are not to bad! B)

Blisters? I don’t have one.

And I definitely have to go back next year, going from 4 to 5 I may have gained a shiny blue medal, but the gits took my crown!
