Can anyone give me the latest info on setting up a new squadron badge? Template etc.
Thanking you all in advance
I’m not sure of the process…basically, you use the Red ATC surrounding, choose a filler and get someone at HQAC to check it. We had a phone call from the new guy the other day actually asking about ours.
A point to note - it’s a Sqn badge. A crest, in heraldry, is something that sits above a coat of arms.
It depends on whether you intend to go down the route of involving the College of Arms.
What should happen is that you send your proposal of both Badge and Motto to the RAF Ceremonial office at Northolt for approval and when they are happy, engage the College. The RAF Ceremonial Office just check whether the proposal is suitable, tasteful etc; the College check the Heraldic accuracy and whether anyone else is using (or has used) what you would like.
In reality, most ATC squadrons don’t give a monkey’s about whether they are using someone else’s design and just do what they want.
Several years ago, HQAC were going to produce an Instruction on what Badges should be like and how to get them approved, I don’t think that ever appeared. All that has happened is the appointment of the Special Projects Officer who will advise Sqns on Heraldic matters prior to the submission to RAF Ceremonial.
Having just moved Sqns, is anyone able & willing to turn a sqn badge into the ‘correct’ format (i.e. red surround etc) for me?
I don;t really have the graphical nouse and software to do so.
I can provide an empty template in Adobe Illustrator format but I’m not redrawing the logo for you.
I can provide it in bitmap (with text) and could cut and paste the insert but they you’d end up with an ugly, non-scalable bitmap logo
What is this Entry Template of which you speak? Does it put the text in the right place? (because I struggle with that bit)
I have an empty outline with text paths in place to run the text round the circle and along the wavy bit (and in the indents). The kerning or spacing sometimes needs to be tweaked to get a good look

Does that work in Photoshop as well?
If I remember correctly the template is on ACC Drive

Pretty please? :cheer:
You can edit that Illustrator template using Inkscape as well for those without access to expancive software. . .
