New Shooting Badges and terminology changes

Badges are same as before.

They’ve just taken one old badge from each colour for each rifle.

Shows when the last time I saw a shooting badge was then…

Locally, we’ve only fired L144 once since covid and air rifles at various sqns so only seen blue ones. Hopefully our first L98 post covid next month if all the ducks line up and CACE says yes. L81 had been dead for years before that.

Not seen it on Twitter / X yet?

I’ve never seen an L144.

You’ve not missed anything.

And the way the sights were set up, miss is all it did.

Budget cuts on the way. How long before the cadet GP is scrapped with no replacement?

That’s a joke for ex-squaddies of a certain age, who were based in the BAOR or RAF(G) who remember the posters put up in guardrooms featuring members of the Baader-Meinhof gang with the word TERRORISTEN at the top of it.

The RAF (Rote Armee Faction in this case) symbol was a Communist star with a H&K MP5 9mm SMG superimposed upon it: they might have wanted to bring down the West German state, but they appreciated quality German engineering. Most other terror groups preferred to use the Russian AKM. I remember one could buy T-Shirts with that symbol printed on them from the classified ads section of the New Musical Express, placed amongst those for gigs.

Lefty support for terrorists is officially cool again amongst young studenty types since the latest Gaza conflict kicked off. I’m glad young people have something to annoy their elders with again - they certainly don’t have the great pop and rock music we had. :fist:

Some would say that the control of language and the terms we use by those in authority is causing more damage to Western Civilisation these days than the Left-wing terrorist organisations ever achieved in the 1970s and 80s… (whew: back on topic!)

I really find it hard to get excited about this topic, given the financial crisis Defence in general and cadets (as the bit which affects me) is suffering from; and in particular the likely effects of this on cadet activities and CFAV retention. We have bigger fish to fry.*

Or those who read Tom Clancy Novels

But as it’s passed out of a service memory could be a good source for a wind up - either regs or cadets - just need to remove the MP5.

“New badge to wear on MTP blanking patch” - April 1st is only a month a way so could be a one. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Galloway’s back so should be all the rage

This has been mentioned. Just because there are big problems doesn’t mean we should deal with little problems too?

This one may also feed into a big problem, as it reduces badge costs. (Maybe?)

I now think this whole topic is a wind-up to expose which side of the political spectrum members of this forum are on. I was at my shooting club the other evening. One of our club members is an air cadet, and she also shoots within the RAFAC on a other local squadron at a high level, so is more involved with cadet marksmanship than I am. She hasn’t heard of any official changing of the terms used. She has no problem with shooting being called ‘marksmanship,’ and thought we were all being ridiculous in either wanting to change the term or being worried about it in the first place.

Like I’ve always said: it ain’t the kids of today who are the snowflakes, it’s their parents’ generation.

Yes. There seems to be people suggesting that changing badges is another waste of money that’s not required. But this should in theory save money. We’ve not bought any new badges, they are old stock, and moving forward we only need to buy 4 different types, not 16.

I’m not even sure how this has got so ‘political’. We’ve literally changed the names of the badges so they fall in line with the rest of the PTS. Bronze road marching, blue first aid, gold comms, etc. Now it’s just blue shooting, bronze shooting etc. That’s all that’s changed.

For those who still haven’t got it:

We have changed the name of a badge, that is all, calm down

The terms haven’t changed, it’s still the principles of Marksmanship, and Live Firing Marksmanship Training.

The only thing that has changed names is the badge.

BUT the COC have said the reason it was changed was to make it gender neutral. So it’s not just a name change, it’s a politically, socially, etc motivated name change.

Have they? Or are you assuming that because the release document says that “The new nomenclature is gender-neutral”? Because the document also says “Recognising achievement and introducing competition are important elements of shooting training and progression. Whilst our current system achieves this, it is overly complex with 16 badges.”.

No where does it says the reason it was changed is to make it gender neutral. Some assumptions have just been made.

I mean, does it really matter what the reason is? It was silly having 16 badges. Going back to 4 is a good idea that I think 99% of people agree with. It’s closer to the rest of the PTS. The naming also makes more sense IMO compared to the rest of the PTS.

If it wasn’t a factor, why mention it?

So what are we doing with the 12 types of badges that we have decided not to use?

Let’s be realistic any savings will be so small as to be negligible.
