Tomorrow (Saturday 6th September 2025), a new sculpture will be unveiled on the boundary of Lincolnshire to commemorate Bomber Command, their connection to Lincolnshire and their contribution to the war effort. Lincolnshire’s nickname is “Bomber County” due to this connection.
The project started on the 1st April 2018, the centenary of the founding of the Royal Air Force. My late barber, Frank Connell, who was engaged in fundraising & charitable efforts throughout his more than 7 decades of life (and is the main reason I ended up in charities myself), was one of the leading people behind making this happen until his passing a few years ago. As a note, he was also former Parachute Regiment himself, and a dedicated member of the local regimental association.
The location of the memorial will be on a hill overlooking the A46, the main road between Newark & Lincoln, near the former RAF Swinderby. It’ll be an easy trip out for anyone at RAF Syerston, RAF Cranwell, RAF Digby or anyone visiting Newark Air Museum.
