NCO Board

I’m currently in the process of revising for an NCO board in 2014, as I go along I’m trying to find sources of questions to test my knowledge (already used the now defunct acp 42) does anyone know of any other source? or able to suggest any good questions?

Best idea is keep up on raf website- what they are doing, who senior staff is and what they do, aircraft in each group and where they are based.

How an operational base is run and the wings on station.

Structure of atc

Your own wing structure

Your regional structure including wings in your region.

And have the correct answers for the role of Snco on a squadron.

Whilst ACP 42 might be defunct, it’s a really good source of knowledge.

I would echo the above. Is this a wing board or are you a cadet and this is with your CO?

If adult staff, make sure you read ACP4 and ACP5, child protection and health and safety.

Whilst the RAF website is useful there is a lot of conflicting information when you drill down to station / squadron level and the amount of information pertaining to the higher structure is vague and massively variable, how upto date information is, is another matter, which is what I feel creates conflict. Which isn’t good, as for your board you may be using information that is out of sync with what the board are using, and mark you as wrong, when in fact you were right.

For me numbers 1 and 22 Gp excellent, 2 group doesn’t even get into the crap category, by comparison; 2 group doesn’t even say who the current AOC is for christ’s sake.

I belive Air Vice-Marshal S K P Reynolds took over 2 Group in Jan this year.

I’m aware of that, but only because I keep an eye on the senior appts as a matter of course, we’ve not been officially informed, which when you consider we are putting people forward for boards and instructing cadets and expecting them to be up to date on things like structure and organisation and who does what, as such, leaving things like this to chance or coming on here to ask things, is pretty poor.

If you look on 1 and 22 group areas it says who the AOC is with a mug shot.

A lot of it isnt really needed (I know the ACO likes us to know) go and ask any random Airman or Officer on an RAF base and I bet most of them struggle to tell you who the base commander is nevermind anyone else it dont stop them from doing the job all they need to know is to call him Sir

Quite right and once you’ve ticked the box, we like the RAF may never need to know it again.
However we are not the RAF and I don’t care about the knowledge levels of serving Officers and OR, outside of their basic training.
We all have cadets and staff going through various processes requiring up to date information wrt org and structure and it is right royal pita to get this.

I have always worked to the remit that they want to know what differences there will be if your in uniform.

Even if you forget the chain of command up to the defence secretary… something I had to remember for my regional VRT, they are more likely to be impressed if you have researched with input and discussion from the relevant members of your Squadron what improvements will happen when your an NCO.

For example, you might be responsible for dress standards and will work with the Squadron WO or whoever the senior NCO is, and the stores officer if you have one and the local Air base to ensure the utmost standards. If you have none of those then you are laughing as you can say as your the only NCO you will be doing this that and the other.

When I went to job interviews in my youth the interviewer inevitably asked “what do you want to be doing in 5 years time (or 10 years)”

I always replied “Making a difference!” If you work to the same premise, but not sound so 1980’s corny then you will be OK.

I was asked that in an appraisal and said breathing without the aid of a machine.

Why people ask such inane things passes me by.

To get a view of how ambitious someone is, where they see themselves going… you must be a right joy to manage!

Thanks for all of the great advice, the board is for adult sgt

I’m also in the process of revising for my Wing Board (January). I’ve found GSTs normally given to cadets as a great source to revise from. I have one I can let you have if you can’t get hold of any. It does have a lot of questions relevant to my wing/region, however these can be changed to suit you.

I would also look at ACP 31 vol 1 & 2 (the ATC & the RAF) - they have the questions at the end of each chapter.

Good luck!

@asdevil yes please, it’s great to talk to someone else also preparing too - I can give you my email to do that if thats ok

Structure of RAF Air Cadets

From HQAC- Cranwell down to Regions then Wings also who is in charge of these.
