Musician badges

Hi all,
I was told when I got enrolled that musician badges can be awarded based on ABRSM music grades, so I submitted my grade 5 certificate to the adj who forwarded it onto wing. Some of the cadets on my sqn said that the criteria had changed for musician badges - does anyone know if this is true? I’m beginning to think so as that certificate was sumitted when I was enrolled (about a year ago) and I’m now sitting here as a cpl still waiting for my bronze music badge I was told I’m entitled to.

If anyone has any info on this I would greatly appreciate it!

You are correct in your assumption based on the latest version of ACTO 123:

Bronze Badges

  1. It is not necessary for a cadet to be in a band to qualify for a ‘bronze’ badge – although the assessment route is designed with band members in mind. A cadet may qualify for a ‘bronze’ badge in one of three ways:

a. By passing a recognised music board examination at grade 5 (practical) in one of the instruments listed in the Table at Annex A. (A copy of the examination certificate is to be forwarded to Wg HQ as evidence of achievement).

b*. By (having qualified or subsequently qualifying for the appropriate ‘blue’ badge) performing in a representative capacity at Wing level.

c. By performing, on a regular basis, in a band or other ensemble graded as “bronze”.

In this context, a representative capacity would include playing in the Wing Band, performing at a Wing event – eg. as a Bugler sounding the Last Post (or a Piper playing a lament) at the Wing Remembrance Day Parade – or representing the Wing (in any class) in the Regional Band Competition. If in doubt, further advice should be sought from the PDM – who is the final arbiter on the matter.

[Annex A is too long to copy but lists pretty much everything i can think of as a non-musician, ask your Adj for a copy of the ACTO if needsbe.]

I would suggest you ask your Adj to chase the Wing. Depending on where you’re located in the country it may be that you’re facing a staffing shortage and as a result everything is taking considerably longer than it should to process.

Hi, thanks - we’re in Essex wing so I’m not really sure its a shortage, maybe just needs a good chase :joy:
