Multicam and MTP

Is there difference between the two? I’m currently looking at buying a bag for fieldcraft but almost everything is advertised as ‘Multicam’. If they are different, can I still use a ‘Multicam’ Bergen/Daysack as opposed to MTP?

They are different, one being a commercially available pattern (multicam) the other, MTP, is the britishised version of Multicam.

You can easily get away with wearing a multicam item like a rucksack.

there is a difference, MTP is a ‘swishier’ pattern than Multicam, but you’d only be able to tell the difference by putting the two together, still, clean, unruffled, and under good light.

if you chose to, there would be no practical problem with wearing MTP clothing with Multicam equipment. however, i would advise you strongly to consider going for either Olive or Tan gear - not only will both colours go very well with MTP, but they don’t look so bone if you use them in civvies. if you really want it all ‘MTP’d’, just use an MTP rucksack cover, you can pick them up on fleabay for under a tenner…

i used a DPM bergen and belt-kit with MTP clothing for several years, once its filthy enough no one notices the difference.

my personal recomendation for a daysac is the Berghaus Munro, or the Karrimor SF Sabre. they’re both around the £50 mark, but my Munro is 20years old and has done countless climbing trips and two Iraq tours and two Afghan tours. at 30 litres they’ve enough room to just ram in the stuff you’ll need - softie jacket, waterproofs, maps, food, water, flask etc… with no fiddly packing requirements.

Angus is pretty spot on, agree completely.

I found that DPM webbing helped break up the shape with the lighter MTP body.

Munro and Sabre both excellent daysacks. Incredibly durable and not too big you pack too much kit in.

Try to stay away from cadetdirect as its an absolute rip off. And anything webtex.

I went for the Karrimor SF Predator 30 as opposed to the Sabre. Essentially the same rucksack but the Predator is covered in MOLLE Ladders, which adds to customisation.

You can purchase zipon side pouches that arent the bergan rocket pouches, with additional smaller pouches. Pretty good unless you put too heavy stuff in as they tend to sag but Stick your Camelbak behind it should sort it out. If not, get the housewife kit out and sew the male/female clips on.
MOLLE is good but sometimes its overkill. I trialled kit last year, and some of the bergans and daysacks were mental with MOLLE, I dont think any had a top flap either! Madness.

Interestingly I have a Berghaus Centurian Bergan in Olive green that was my Dad’s when he served. I have smashed it for a bit too. Thing is rugged as anything and Still going strong. Berhaus are pretty nails!

Your best bet really is to go olive green or tan, it goes with anything. And get a waterproof cover thats DPM or MTP.

What I want to see Molle wise, is how many pouches with ladders on you can attach to each other. So a medium pouch on a larger pouch, with smaller pouches on those. Sort of a pooch pyramid.

You animal.

a development…

coz i was bored and i’ve got a wedge buring a hole in my shellsuit, i went looking for the Centurio - i deserve so much you see… and it appears that Berghaus have stopped producing their military range: Munro, Centurio, Atlas, Vulcan, Cyclops.

OP, what do you want a 'sac for? waterproofs and lunch for a day at the 50m barrack range in May? 24 hour exercise at 500m in mid-wales in March? 6 day unsupported trek up past Ullapool on December?

What sized Bergen do you need for most camps? And do you need a daysack also?
