MTP ..is the end in sight already?

It appears ( more than hearsay but not absolute fact) out bestest buddies in the states have decided the MTP concept is in fact rubbish.

Great in Afghan, rubbish in our bit of europe.

So they are looking at returning to Digi-Woodland as them there ruskies are rattling their sabres.

So, have you kept your S95? You know we’ll follow suit in due course…

Is it right that mtp is now being issued to VRT?

i’ve heard all manner of things from pretty young USAF officers at fairford - phone numbers, date arrangements - none of them turned out to be true.

on the substance. no, its not true.

firstly because MTP/multicam is by no means pump on the steppes of eastern Europe, and secondly because since about 2003 the US Army alone has spent around $5billion on changing its camouflage uniforms not once, but twice. congress has gone a funny shade of mental at the waste and incompetance, and the whole US military has been told to stop, err… messing about with uniforms and start spending its money on stuff it needs, not stupid vanity projects or fads.

moreover, even if the US had decided that MTP/Multicam was less than ideal in eastern Europe, there is no chance whatsoever that the UK government would sign off on such a publicly embarrassing, and costly about turn (ha! see what i did there…?) given the potential rebellions it faces on defence policy/budget from within its own ranks over F-35 numbers, Type 26 frigate numbers and build locations, and the size of the regular army.

It is being issued to those ACO Personnel who are scaled for it - SATTs, CTT etc etc

i have heard (and seen myself) that the MTP does have limited scope in the UK so can well believe other comments it doesn’t work…

but how often are these “camouflage” fatigues worn as a concealment in the Uk/Europe in addition to a “working uniform”??

(rather the CS95 as a working uniform and a second uniform (MTP) as “combat” wear - two uniforms = £twice)

I would suggest if the OP is correct MTP will become the standard ‘DPM’ for the ACO, as they’ll need to get rid of it somewhere and then we’ll be told we can’t wear the new version. But then some of the wannabes will bellyache and be allowed, which will then fliter down to various other groups on Regions and Wings and then we’ll have the mish mash we’ve always had wrt ‘DPM’.

It works fine. Obviously it is going to be less effective in certain types of vegetation than DPM, but on the whole it is better. Remember that the uniform is only one part of camouflage and is only supposed to help you blend in better. It is not supposed to be an invisibility cloak.

Few points to note on MTP, as already mentioned it does no work in E Europe, which if we ended up fighting there I think we have bigger things to worry about and in past conflicts in E Europe it could be argued that DPM did not work wither due to the level of fighting in built up areas.

Also MTP in the UK… the last time we were required to fight in this style to defend the rolling hills of Great Britain, I would take a guess at 1066? Besides that point it is no different to DPM, DPM doesn’t work in all environments in the UK, which is the same for MTP. Adapt to the environment around you.

Then there is also the fact that MTP does not come in one shade. Consideration has been taken for other operational environments but not issued as standard. You might have seen serving personnel walking round in what links like fake ‘brighter’ MTP. It is in fact a miss issue of ‘tropical’ MTP.

So will we loose MTP? no, when will it next change? probably 50yrs after we start conflicts on Mars and we realise it is no longer fit for purpose, the same way we worked with DPM.

Look at it this way; if the parent services start to phase out their MTP, there will be shed loads for the Cadet Forces :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes but if the Parent service phase it out… all of he cadets wont want it…the will want whatever the new Uniform is… there are still major stocks of CS95 kicking around suitable for cadets, but everyone seems to want to be “Ally” or whatever you call it these days…

A quote on BBC news at time mtp was launched;

Lt Col Toby Evans - a military advisor with the Government’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory - told the BBC the new uniform was a compromise between having a uniform that was perfectly suited to a specific environments and one that would work well across a wide range of conditions.

It’s still Ally.

I have both temperate and tropical MTP PCS clothing and the shade is identical. It only fades if you don’t wash it properly.

Have you been told how to wash it? Have you read the care label?
