Making a website

Hi is making a squadron website difficult to do?
I would like to have one but have no clue how you set up a new website and is there any ways that dont charge?

Take a look at http://sqn.ac/ from our very own @DJRice
You won’t find much (if any) that are free, and Sqn.ac is one of the best value hosts that you’ll find.

I’ve used it for my past 2 sqns and my current one, happy to chat on teams etc to help you out with it.

@DJRice, mine is currently on SquareSpace, but you can’t complain about those low, low prices…

Would it be easy enough to import a website, or would we have to build from scratch?

OP, as above. Very easy to build, but SquareSpace costs.
Check ours out for an example on that service: www.1324squadron.co.uk

It’s possible to make one with SharePoint and make it publicly accessible. Can’t remember exactly how I did it within RAFAC, but it worked and then you don’t need to think about hosting costs, just the URL costs.

Speak with your Wing Media Officer too and make sure you get the guidance on what you can and cannot have on the site. For us as a squadron (everyone is different) it is about purpose usually it’s a way for people to contact the squadron regarding recruitment. If your recruitment is through a steady stream of word of mouth/carnivals in local areas which ours is, we don’t have a website. Its more the fact it’s not needed as the main RAFAC website provides us with “recruitment leads” outside of the word of mouth stuff.

What are you wanting for the site?

We’ve just developed a Google site for our cadet-facing stuff (that links to Google drive etc for file sharing etc)

Did anything ever come of the ACC Wordpress themes project (it was a good few years ago)!

I designed our squadrons one through wordpress then spoke to the OC about sorting the URL - we worked out a solution using the squadron’s existing URL arrangement through ionos which turned out really cheap and paid for the wordpress premium plan which was more expensive but still worked out for the OC and civcom. Perhaps invite your cadets to come up with designs and work with them to add functionality etc? As for hosting I have never seen anything free so good luck however the making is not at all difficult if you use something like wordpress or squarespace

I’m using Wordpress to update ours at the moment.

Seems harder to find decent free themes that don’t need a paid plan to unlock all their features though

I wrote a theme from scratch for kentaircadets.com
It’s not perfect but wasn’t too hard to do either.

I used creatio 2 for ours, quite simple but easy to work with, more of a solid base to expand on.
