So I’m CCF, and we use the ATC classifications (e.g. we call it First Class, Leading and Senior, not Part 1, 2, 3)
So would that mean that I am able to do MAC once I’ve finished my Senior?
I know that CCF (RAF) typically doesn’t have a MAC equivalent, but because we don’t use the typical training (i.e. we do the full 3 subjects for senior, not 2 like in CCF Part 3) would it be possible to?
And can whomever knows the answer to this also please advise why there are differences?
Part 1, part 2 & advanced are the original names going back to the 1930s. They were expanded in the ATC to fill the time & to include project work which the CCF never did because of the more limited training time.
MAC in the ATC was the renaming of staff cadet part 1 - again what do we do with cadets to pad the training out a little.
There is an argument that the ATC go to the CCF classification method particularly with the RAF rank changes but that’s for another thread.
In answer to the question I believe the short answer is no as the CCf(RAF) are not scaled for the badge as it’s private purchase (pts badges are funded by the air cadet general purpose fund not by the RAF so the CCF don’t get access)
However current CCF bods maybe able to give a more up to date position - may be worth asked your CCT(RAF) SNCO
When the PTS was introduced CCF moved to the same classification system as the ATC. Part 1,2 and Advanced were dropped. (Even though historically I think they were better and should be adopted by the ATC as they included leadership and adventure training/specialist training as well as the academic elements).
Before going on ELA we did MAC as a self study course and were able to request the badges through our TEST SNCO (but he had very sticky fingers everytime he visited Cranwell so I don’t know if we were meant to have privately purchased them)
Thanks for the replies so far.
As I understand it, even in the ATC, Senior and MAC are vastly self-studied subjects.
To that extent, what would prevent a CCF cadet from doing the same in their own time?
They are. I am not sure they should be. We do cadets a disservice by not teaching at least some subjects at Snr and introducing some of the study and thinking processes behind them.
Then they are set up to study the ones they want. I also try to make the modules interactive with some independent research and a presentation back to the group if I can. Otherwise I’d get bored of the sound of my own voice!
But to your point if they’re not taught then yes by all means self study, or maybe find a couple of others at the same level and work through a module as a group?
I’d never heard of ELA and had to look it up here: H&S / ELA.
Is it still a thing, or rolled into the RA training now?
They mean extended leave of absence.
Still a thing, we’ve just got our first cadets through. A lot simplier than I remember it being and don’t know why I’d delayed so long doing it with this squadron
The e-certificate is an option via training hub, so guess that means CCF can have MAC

There is no difference now between CCF and ATC syllabuses so:
CCF now has First Class, Leading, Senior and MAC
CCF now have to do 3 subjects for Senior, not 2
All the other stuff required for CCF Part 3 (fieldcraft, AT, leadership) has been dropped
The CCF Part 3 was closer to the Army APC syllabus, hence all the other elements. We’ve turned the classification syllabus into an academic exercise for the most part, for kids who spend the rest of the week in a classroom on the same site. This is called Progress.
An observation - and I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir here - but from what I’ve seen on courses CCF produces well-rounded cadets. I’m sure the broader curriculum helped. Shame that it’s been watered down.
It’s almost like the CCF(RAF) was a different, complementary organisation with its own traditions, strengths and weaknesses, rather than being a poor cousin of the ATC. Who knew?
I oooked at this briefly a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t find anything current. Care to share your secret?
Our Wing H&S Officer put all the resources on the Wing page - the booklet is very different from when I originally taught it, not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing
Is it worth emailing your H&S officer as they may have it somewhere? I was similar to you couldn’t find info on it and thought might be same as Cyber because you had to be a qualified instructor to teach it and I had moved wings so emailed just to find out.
Mine was like its all kept on this page, once done email me the names and the instructor (we ended up opting to do it as an SMS for ease), attach their workbooks to the Qual and he’ll do the certificates.
Unfortunately H&S is currently one of the posts that is gapped here. I shall endeavour to track down some more info. Thanks for confirming it still exists though.
