Over the past 18 months almost every parade, dinner and a few other events I have attended the Lord Lt has attended. But on each occasion an LLC of any colour has not been in attendance, in fact in all my years I’ve only seen the LLC turn out for Wing Parades if the LL has attended. This makes me wonder what do LLC actually do? Do they get the nice little patch and line for their CV and that’s it? Given as far as I know, they are appointed from ATC, SCC, ACF and I believe the Scouts appoint something similar, you thought one of them could be with the the LL.
I thought they were supposed to attend functions with the LL being an ambassador for youngsters in the Lieutenancy.
Although I’m on quite good speaking terms with the LL, I haven’t quite had the front to ask where the youngsters are.
I would have thought given the youngsters are normally 16+ who get this, the chance to get their face known would appeal.
Totally depends on two things -
- what the LL wants his/her cadet to do
- what the LLC wants/can do during their tenure
At the moment, my daughter is LLC and had done loads; yet her predecessor did nothing, but that could also be down to lack of transport. She made contact with the LL Office as soon as it was confirmed, and made herself available.
My daughter has been lucky, fitting LLC duties around cadet and university work, her ability to drive herself around meant she could go to whatever was thrown at her.
As for activities in the past 11 months, for example, she has attended the following with the LL -
- Met the Queen in June, as part of the Queen’s country-wide tour
- Met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in November
- Remembrance Parade
- LL’s Garden Party with dignities, key players from across the county.
She (We) were also lucky to be invited to an AFB Dinner in November, as an example of an outstanding Air Cadet.
It a bit like cadets really, you only get out what you put in…
Its exactly as RB states it what you make of it. I was one of 7 LLtCdts in my day and I was the one that did the most by far. I did:
Awards Ceremony
Remerance Sunday
Reception
OBE Presentation and DL Presentation
Wing Presentations
SSAFA Concert
Armed Forces Day Parade
Home Coming Parade
Reception on Ship
Wing Activites Day
Garden Party
Cadet 150 Reception
Queen Elizabeth Cross Presentation
Queens Award for Enterprise
Cadet 150 Service
Local Presentation
I am still good friends with the LLt and keep in contact regularly and have met up on a few occasions since I left.
Indeed, one of our cadets got nominated as LLC for the last year - the Queen’s Jubilee year and the Olympic Games saw him a very busy chap - particular as the county was host to a couple of events! He said he was generally out once every two weeks for an evening or day function. All 3 services took a very active role and it worked well in our favour helping to raise our profile as a service.
The big win is that he’s a driver, who’s finished school and has a very understanding employer so was able to zip around the County at will.
I’d suggest that LLCs without such flexibility wouldn’t make the best candidates in the first place.
From my experience it does largely depend on the LL rather than the cadet. I was fortunate enough to be LLC of a LL who had been in post for 18 years and had lots of fingers in pies (so to speak). I think I was probably offered a function/parade/event every fortnight to three weeks with the only compulsory one being Remembrance Parade. This was very realistic as the LL understood work, university and cadet commitments wholeheartedly.
A friend of mine preceded me as LLC with a new LL who wasn’t as active in his role. She ended up having to ask the Wg Cdr to gently remind the LL that she existed!
