Local council building closure

New to civ com
Our squadron have a council building next door which is closing down at the end of the month. It probably will be put up for sale. Is it possible to aquire this for free from the council. It is bigger than our present squadron home which limits our cadet intake.
Our squadron is based in a area of low to middle income(more towards low) area.

That seems extremely unlikely as the council will need to get best value from the asset, which would mean selling it at market value.

A lease might be possible, which would need to be agreed by the HQAC infrastructure team. Do you know if your current building is leased or owned?

You would need to make a very strong case about local demand e.g. showing a long waiting list over several years and that the Sqn is well staffed and viable. Even then, there just isn’t the money for us to expand, so I won’t be too hopeful. You’ll never know unless you try of course.

It could be possible through a Community Asset Transfer but there may be lots of hoops to jump through: https://mycommunity.org.uk/files/downloads/Download-Understanding-Community-Asset-Transfer.pdf

There’s certainly precedent for it.

Key bit being it’s the RFCA that’s acquired it, not the CWC!

Didnt realise they had spare dollar

And it’s not a Rugby Club.

Councils are obliged to secure the “best value for the taxpayer” when disposing of various assets.

The likelihood of getting it for free is, therefore, very small. However, it’s always worth a try.
