Leadership materials (not Command Tasks)

I’m looking for suggested materials, both to improve my understanding of the discipline and potentially to use with cadets.

Ideally, but not exclusively, military.

Books, podcasts, short videos, even PowerPoints. Just not shark infested custard.

I have a very limited number of RAF materials, all in hard copy. There seems to be more Army material out there?

Any pointers welcome.

Turn that ship around. Leadership is language (same guy I think).

The former had a good video based on his brief Ted Talk excerpt.

As you say, the Army does have a lot of good materials about leadership.

In case you haven’t seen it, and for anyone else who’s looking, many of their publications are here under the Centre for Army Leadership: https://www.army.mod.uk/support-and-training/our-schools-and-colleges/centre-for-army-leadership/army-leadership-publications/

Media videos on this thread

David Marquets Turn the ship around & leadership is language is a good start.

Books wise

Chimp paradox (which has a version for young people as well)

Rebel Ideas but Matt SYED

Mark urban’s RIFLES and his other book GENERALS are good passive leadership learning tools, particularly Generals allowing comparisons in leadership style with how things have evolved over the years.

I’ve found their podcast series good too.

12 O’clock High. Great film which explores several areas and principles of leadership. And followship.

Lessons in Leadership - Alex Ferguson.

It isn’t one i have read but i am sure it would help. There was a documentary i watched on him which was ideal for what you want. he talked about leadership and management but cann’t find it now - but that book title popped up as i was searching so might help as a non-military application

Would be good to have a ‘library’ of resources people can add to.

FWIW I was researching some leadership theory and it was really quite hard to find the RAF take on it (deep in the AP) but the Army content was very easy to find and potentially a lot easier to adapt if I did want to use it with cadets.

Not singling out the RAF, nothing came up from the RN either. A fair bit from the USAF, USMC and both the Australian and Canadians.

Slightly different, but are there any good digital leadership and teambuilding exercises?

Kind of like that “command” software, but games etc that we can pull up on the computer and get a team working together while projecting on a big screen or something?

I don’t know any, but you’ve reminded me of the TV show Time Commanders.

I created almost a table top battle example.

got a local map of the town, gave them a bunch of units & said to come up with a defence plan.

Used computer& screen to allow mapping, unit intel Etc. suppose you could use a shared document to depict intel up dates.

Started the scenario with the officers mess being hit & the cadets were the senior most officers on the ground.

I had a staff member act as the “intelligence officer” (I.e games master / dungeon master) that kept it all ticking over.

Worked quite well as something different.

I know one Sqn used loads of flight sims for a “crisis command” style exercise - cadets are shown doing the exe at the 2minute mark

I’d you want to go down a non wargaming route, then both Space Engineers and Kerbal Space Programme work well.

KSP has the steeper learning curve, but there are some basic scenarios and I think a Squadron has written some of its own.

The challenge I’ve found is condensing the way these packages work so the activity can run over one or two standard training periods, they tend to be rather open ended.

These are certainly great ideas.

I wonder if there are any escape room style things, whether or not they need running by someone as a go-between.

This was suggested to me as an idea

Suppose you could use radios & do something similar (e.g. one group has a LEGO set the other group has the instructions)

Anyone used these?

A little pricey and you don’t own them is the only issue…

I think this would be great and it helps that I can get it in my MacBook too.

Print a few copies of the manuals, radio, bomb in a different room with a couple of people.

Edit: I’ve purchased “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes”

Great game. We got it for PSVR a couple of Christmases ago after seeing it on Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit.

I look fwd to seeing the Facebook post showing your Sqn using it

I’ve spotted “Escape Simulator 2”, which again looks pretty decent and is apparently best for 2-4 players, but each would need their own computer (and copy of the game) in order to make it work.

Still, could be good for a teambuilding competition over the course of a year. Something we squeeze in as plans need to change. Not expensive at all once you’ve already got the tech.

Following these Steam machines with great interest…
