RAF King’s Birthday Honours 2025 | Royal Air Force
AOC 22 Gp Commendation for Essex Wing Warrant Officer’s Team, Royal Air Force Air Cadets
Another year, another missing letter in the post
Delighted to see that he got one.
Very well deserved.
Ah, more ATC erasure I see.
And Dep OC Essex AOC 22 Gp Commendation; Sqn Ldr R Jones.
There’s always a big thing about people not receiving an award, but how many are actually pushed up to AOC 22 (min) per turn of the handle, and how many get Comdt AC, Reg Comdt or LL Certificates of Meritorious Service.
A big part of the problem is actually nominating at the grass roots, and I think that is largely down to people having absolutely no idea which benchmarks to use for working out whether someone should be nominated for something.
The clearest advice is “have they done exactly what is expected and done it well? Awesome, nominate them for recognition and a pat on the back”.
The easiest solution (and I think it’s how we’ve addressed it in Central & East Yorkshire Wing) is a year-round portal and you get guided through giving the right info and then someone else writes it up and works out the level it should go in at.
It’s a great system and even then, our boss had to email everyone in the last week because he’d basically had no nominations. You can lead a horse to water…
We do very well for our size on the national list (two MBEs is a big deal), but people only see the MBE. With so many amazing volunteers, it’s obvious that inflation kicks in and before you know it the exceptional has become normal.
It’s a clear indication of how amazing our people are.
Every year, I tell my people to recommend either through me or directly via the portal. As long as they act on any desire they may have to pat someone on the back.
Nominate, nominate, nominate.
I’ll also say it was pretty amazing to see Andrew Copson of Humanists UK receive an OBE for all the immense work he’s led on over the years and raising awareness.
The fact his award is phrased as being “for services to the non-religious” feels pretty big in its own right.
Not honours as such but notable that there have been two promotions to Field Marshal, the first 5* appointments since 2014. Surprised Stuart Peach didn’t make MRAF tbh
It’s nice to see the recognition of non-religious pastoral care, both through this and through the military padres now being able to be Humanist.
I’m also surprised Lord Peach hasn’t been promoted to 5* rank yet, especially after him holding the senior position in NATO.
You might be surprised, I’m glad - having fallen under his command previously… He should push off back to the vaults at Gringolts where he escaped from.
If you look at the CDS list he’s the earliest CDS not to hold 5* as far as I can see. It’s taken a few years for his immediate predecessors to be granted the rank, so perhaps in a few years it’ll be his time?
