Keys for Sqn

thats what timpsons are for…
Oh I can cut a million copies of the keys, but wouldn’t be able to through the TA’s electronic gate!
My belief is that there are 3 sets of keys and a master key.

2 sets are given to the unit., one set in a box on the unit that RFCA contractors have access to.

The master key is held at WHQ/RFCA.

Contractors sign for a key to the box and main door returned on completion of work.

No unit is allowed to get more than 2 copies of the keys, was and is a big issue for all.

Dont know if this a national issue or standard but think it is.
We’ve got 3 sets, and RFCA have a 4th.

We tried to get more cut, but we couldn’t just do so as they’re security keys and need the master key/card thing to authorise the cut.

Our request went to OC HRFCA and he quite sternly told us to get back in our box.

Out of interest, saying what & quoting what references?

If as a unit you have good grounds for more keys, as long as they are accounted for in a key register, what is the issue? You might have say 6 members of staff with good reasons to have a set, especially if they can’t make every parade night, or come in on ad-hoc occasions to catch up on admin, putting uniform into stores, running a range evening, getting the mini-bus for a weekend event, etc, etc. Swapping keys around is a logistical nightmare - & if a set gets lost, who was the person concerned…?

Not having enough keys is counter-productive - & worst case, leads to the “under the door mat” mentality!

Out of interest, do the “rules” allow for a heavy duty combi-lock security box so that a set of keys is always available?

RFCA sited Security and cost. No unit in the wing can get more keys cut than they currently have. Usually 2-3 sets only. RFCA have a set in a box at the unit, contractors sign for the front door and box key if any works are to be carried out on the unit.

Counter proposal to RFCA…

 1. Sqn will pay cost of extra set.
 2. Key register in force = no security risk - what would be their specific requirements?
 3. What are maximum number of keys held elsewhere? More than your Sqn? Why the limit?
 4. What are RFCA’s views in external key box if no further keys can be issued?
 5. Why are they imposing limits that restrict your logistics & time-management of staff?
