Is there anything an Adult SNCO CANT do?

They can’t tell a Jobsworth WO or FS where they can get off.

well . . . they can . . .

Because of the nature of the volunteer organisation the line between SNCO and Officer has been blurred somewhat over the last 10 years. I would encourage them to think about future aspirations as to what path they choose.

They could be an SNCO for a few years, and then commission, more difficult to go the other way. They may want to hold a role such as OC SATT or Regional Shooting Officer at some point where I would advise they take the officer role early on and work through their promotion matrix.

Hopefully whichever role they take they will be engaged and remain in the org!

otoh, I’d hope that people are much more pragmatic these days. If someone spent 10 yrs as a SNCO and then switched to officer, it would not be at all unfeasible to get to (for e.g.) Sqn Ldr within 10 yrs, particularly if they’d already held Wg roles as an SNCO. If they’re a CWO now, they’d still only be halfway through their adult service anyway.

I agree and we are seeing people move from SNCO in to an accelerated officer promition which helps.

I’d also think that if someone spent 10 years as a CI and got experience in a wide range of activities, there’s no reason they also couldn’t do the same if they then commissioned

Can’t easily switch from Officer to SNCO, but the reverse is easier.

Not something they can’t do, but less likely to command a sqn if they’re an SNCO.

At the very least less likely to have some idiot think they can apply pressure to force it to happen…

plenty of people would see this as a reason to go down the SNCO route…

Indeed. Myself included.

I really feel that I need to kill this misconception.
There is nothing difficult about changing from Commissioned Officer to SNCO. One simply resigns one’s Cadet Forces Commission and applies for appointment as an SNCO.

If someone picks a route and changes their mind they can make the switch.

Didn’t know this, had always thought that myth was true. Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

I think it was hard in the old VR days

You have to be a Capt of Equivalent to sign off a TOPL application.

So how does that work on a Squadron without a Flt Lt?

21 posts were split to a new topic: EUF and TOPL

The bigger consideration is potential 45+ years in an adult uniformed role, being unappreciated by the CoC and nothing at the end of it, except memories.

Many of the things people can or cannot do are down to ensuring there is a reason to be an Officer or SNCO and not be a CI. If you’ve done the training the type of uniform you wear or not is completely irrelevant.

Another despite HQAC moment… I thought I had fun as a cadet… I’ve had more fun as staff… despite HQAC!!!

Near Impossible. The only person I know who.managed it changed their mind pre oic so their VRT commission didn’t count

You have to hang on to the fun bits for dear life, just to keep you going.
