Interim Procedures - Bivvying

For those who haven’t seen it yet - gospel from on high…

Make of it what you will…

To my mind, its simply a document reinforcing common sense and most of what ACP16 actually says. The only difference is that training for all EC’s will become mandated and not before time. That said, I still feel a standardised approach to training should be taken and a suitable, fit-for-purpose training package created by an experienced and knowledgeable person.

And the fact that it’s now either/or when deciding on bivvying or ‘night exercises’ - rather unhelpfully though what actually constitutes a night exercise isn’t defined…

Yes, that would be my only comment too Matt. Otherwise (despite taking 3 months to think through) it’s a relatively sensible suggestion (and indeed we do most of what’s included anyway).

Interestingly it’s not been officially released - no announcement or email, just tucked away in a corner.

Email went from COS to regcmdt and our region out to OC wings and out from there

We heard you the first time…

I was berated by the Chain for asking questions about this document and what the plan is with the ‘formal training’ for ECs - they were asking me where I found the document and told me it wasn’t policy. My argument was ‘if it is not policy, why has it been put on sharepoint?’

Then the same individual emailed to say that they stood corrected after talking to HQAC and that is now a live procedure.

Still heard nothing officially here yet, despite what Wokkaman said.

did that then same individual answer your questions accepting that the procedure is live and offered the clarification you requested to be able to follow the policy…or has it left the policy as useful as a chocolate fireguard as it is unsure how best to implement it?

Yeah pretty much mate - I am now left none the wiser as we are in an area of the country with a ‘higher level of governance’ which is is yet to be clarified…

Seems the reson for the Bivvy ban are now starting to leak out (I dont know any “facts” only the gossip so wont comment further)

I would have to wonder which halfwit would actively put cadets (or anyone) in a makeshift shelter normally of disruptive pattern material in an area which as traffic moving freely around in it. When I’ve known cadets do it, they normally are in amongst trees so they have somewhere to tie off against. Even on a camp site in tents if possible we put the tents away from vehiular access or if possible use our vehicles as a barrier.
I can’t help but think whoever wrote this when they had been watching Carry Ons, Dads Army or similar and mistaking it for real life.

Reading the rest of it, it does beggar belief at the sort of levels staff conducting FMS are at in terms of outdoor activity experience. I also wonder how many get dragged along with the “excitement” of playing soldier and want to make it special for cadets. Although I don’t do FMS I’ve always insisted on full training and a full kit check the week before, as I do for AT camping / expeds. My FMS staff didn’t like it as it’s not AT, but as with AT it highlights kit deficiences that have time to be corrected. Just seems like commonsense.
