Does anyone do inter sector competitions if so what
Inter sector competitions!!
Your really keen my WSO just wishes our sector can talk to each other
There aren’t enough weekends for what we do, let alone worrying about anything like this.
No one mentioned weekend GHE2. You can do things on parade nights.
Even less so then, especially as it would probably involve transporting to a different location and then timings would be critical.
Give the negativity a rest mate. It’s boring
We have done inter-sector stuff, traditionally over the summer when everyone’s numbers are down.
I like you as you really haven’t (or come across as such) much experience running cadet activities.
I have a habit for being realistic about things and if that’s not blue skies all the way, so be it.
We have tried to run inter sqn activities (between 3 of us) and it never worked unless we restricted ourselves to sqn HQs and due to lack of parking space soon fell off the calendar… As soon as you looked to go elsewhere no one could find anywhere suitable that didn’t cost anything, if you wanted access to toilets.
If you are to run something new, start small, and find something the squadrons can get involved in.
If some squadrons don’t want to join because of “reasons”, at least you have invited them. Remember that travel can be an issue, but during the summer, with longer evenings, some parents are happy for cadets to return to squadron “slightly” late (As long as they are told in advance!).
Maybe run a sports evening? take cadets to a range day, where cadets will gain a score for their squadrons?
We’ve gone to a squadron that is 30 mins away for an inter-squadron sports night before. and arrived back at 2200. Parents were told in advance that there would be a late finish… and a slightly earlier departure…
Give me a PM for a few more Ideas.
Regards
T
We’ve done things with the 3 squadrons local to us 2 or 3 times a year for the last 3 years, mostly sports on playing fields as these are the most fun and don’t need specialised staff or cadets to pass tests. We do an orienteering exercise as well in the local towns with clues to follow based on roads/buildings to show cadets map reading is a life skill and not just for expeds etc, I got this idea from a mate who is a Scout leader. I found out more about the area around the sqn sorting this out than in all the years I’ve been there. We don’t any of this in uniform to avoid potential problems. We see it more as a social event than a formal competition, although the cadets are naturally competitive. We feel if you made it a competition more formally it loses the main objective We’ve actively avoided drill.
Each sqn brings some munchies and we have a good time, although it is restricted to the period May to July as the nights are lighter. We did look at weekend activities but was just too much of a nuisance to fit in with everything else we’re doing. It does mean a bit of travel and that is and always has been the biggest problem and the need to get to any of the units earlier and come back later has meant the numbers aren’t what they could be for the visiting units.
One of the sqns has just got a new CO and she’s not keen on it so won’t be playing anymore. She said she’d like it more formal and include drill.
