Incidents in the Air

A new thread to cover incidences, accidents and near misses.

And, true to form, we start with yet another Boeing issue!

Not sure if anyone saw the reports of the NPAS/F-15 “near miss” earlier in the week.

Reads that the helicopter crew believed the small fast thing with lights was a drone close in, when in fact it was an F-15 in the distance.

I read about this earlier in the week. Amazing that the Helo crew didn’t see any other indication that the aircraft was some distance away. Mk1 eyeball requires recalibration.

Aviation eyesight relies on many aspects, size of the “tgt,” colour, relative closing angle, range, speed, weather visibility, height, background contrast, mental “expectation” (from TCAS or Air Traffic input), etc, etc.

For the Lakenheath incident, the helicopter crew were expecting a drone, & local ATC didn’t advise them that jet traffic was in the circuit.

EDIT - AIRPROX REPORT

The Airprox team add a lot of details to their reports - May 2025 summary with links.

Not in the air but feels appropriate for this topic…
