IBN 16/20 **RATIONALISATION OF ROYAL AIR FORCE FLYING BADGES UNDER ASTRA**

And actually, QRs don’t apply to RAFAC staff. RAFAC can adopt a policy to follow certain elements of them but seeing as we are all civilians the QRs have no legal standing other than the rare occasions that the Armed Forces Act applies to civilians (such as when a passenger in a military aircraft)

Now, as it happens I am fully behind the idea that flying badges and other RAF-earned qualification badges should be worn in RAFAC uniform.
But, giving “short shrift” to someone whose only ‘crime’ was to, quite correctly, point out what our dress regulations actually permitted at the time? That’s a pretty poor show I’d say.

Because QR 727 says so.

Sadly one of the unforseen consequences of the move to the CFC.

If you’d spent 3 years getting wings, the struggle to go ‘Combat Ready’ in order to retain said wings, the work involved in becoming a good Sqn Pilot you’d be pretty annoyed if you were told you weren’t entitled to them!

Very foreseen I’m sure.

Actually I think this was one of the intended consequences

No. It says they are to be worn in line with appropriate dress regs.

Which have not been updated iaw AP1358!

Your fight doesn’t lie with us, but with HQAC or (I assume still) WO Mundy. Those above are just pointing out what’s in black and white, we didn’t write it.

Think the gold edit sits with ATF

Yeah, quite possibly.
Or I might have accepted that, having retired from the RAF and joined a different organization, it might not carry over.
Either way though, I certainly wouldn’t take to task someone with no control over what the RAFAC does or doesn’t allow…

Clearly the thing to do was as you did… Raise it with HQ and get the regs changed.

RAFAC TA

Yeah that

But getting back to the original question when they introduced the single AC badge to the RAF, the RAF only allowed those still serving as aircrew on the implementation date to wear the new badge.

The IBN for the new Air Specialist badge admittedly doesn’t say that. Instead saying that “those previously awarded CC or AS badges can switch”. However, unlike the IBN at the top of the topic (which is targeted at Regular, Reserve and CFAVS) this IBN is targeted only at Regular and Reserve. Therefore, my guess is that to wear the new badge you would still need to be serving in one of those.

At the time I was VR(T) (so part of the Parent Service) and therefore subject to QRs. Furthermore, as an ex-rRegular, I have a letter from AMP (Air Member for Personnel) stating that I am entitled to wear the wings should I volunteer to transfert to a VR(T) Commission post retirement. I would suggest that there was a lack of ‘Joined up Thinking’ at HQAC.

The AP doesn’t give the authority, it merely tells you how the badge should be displayed.

I’m not fighting with you, merely pointing out that HQAC have fallen behind (Yet Again) - It’s this sort of stupidity that shows that HQAC, despite protestations to the contrary, cares about the square root of damned all for its CFAVs.

That’s really just a matter of semantics though. Those who are no longer serving are no longer bound by RAF dress regulations (and most would likely want to retain the badge they earned whilst serving).
It’s effectively the same situation.

In most cases, but it does cause problems for the CFAVs who forget they are no longer in the forces.

You’ve got to be a particular brand of special if you’ve told someone they can’t wear a flying badge earned during regular service when they have transferred to CFAV service. It’s just pure jealousy and petty power games.
