In Short no! she cant do that the CO should have the last say in promotion and no one should ever be given an extra stripe to wear on camp not sure why they would need it??
Maybe not, but it happens a lot. I’ve seen it several times on camps. On the one occasion as CC I had a short “chat” with an Sqn Cdr who did this and when I got back advised his SWSO was a pillock he was. The girl was out of her depth as a Sgt and I found out that she had only been a Cpl for a few months and was promoted for camp as they didn’t have any SNCOs going.
People ‘promoting for camp’ is one of the biggest gears I have to grind and it happens an awful lot - always with the same squadrons every year. Personally, I look at cadets during camp to assess whether they’re ready for promotion AFTERWARDS, not the other way around! To promote someone beyond their ability just as they’re heading off for one of the most challenging experiences they can have as a cadet NCO is wholly unfair to the cadet concerned.
I ran an overseas camp last year where 8 of the 28 cadets present had been ‘promoted for camp’ by their OCs. Cue lots of petty and pathetic arguments about who was in charge of work-details, who had seniority over who, etc, etc. Needless to say, duty NCO lists, work-details, etc had been worked out long before we got to camp, so the stroppy and indignant newly-promoted NCOs had to be put firmly back in their box and referred back to the rank stated on their TG21s.
