How to prepare for Dodentocht?

Try about 130,000 - 140,000

That’s a nope, the Pathfinder March was far enough in one day for me.

Might be washing my hair that date then

I did a 23 KM day on Sunday and did 32k steps, so that works out about right!

Not bad for a gentle bimble!

Say “RAF” without saying “RAF”… springs to mind!

I recommend the Ibis in Sint-Niklaas. Always full of walkers, really friendly staff and an easy train ride to/from Bornem.

I’d focus on cleaning your pacestick, or else it’ll start growing hair of its own

Thanks, I shall keep that in mind for this year.

It would appear to meet the minimum standard for RAF personnel…. But £100 per night, as opposed £20 for the entire stay at the campsite… although the attraction of Room Service when you get back on Saturday night is very alluring!

Just do what i do and have a little nap in/outside the chip shop on the main road after the walk.

I fall asleep 1/2way through eating and when i awake i still have chips… its like room service without having to get up to answer the door.

Our group have already debriefed last year’s failed efforts to go out / party / drink / get a meal… or frankly do anything after we finished…

The plan WAS… after finishing, get back to the campsite, get cleaned up, head back into town, get something to eat, start drinking… and see where the evening takes us…

What actually happened… chafing had just started in the last 3-4 km… by the time we crossed the line, it was reasonably well established… get back to the campsite, dump kit, shuffle from the tents to the toilet block and attempt to “drop the kids off at the pool” (that have been patiently waiting for the last 12 hours and carried around the DM), then shuffle even slower to the wash block and go for a shower… getting undressed in the shower changing room cubicle space, required yoga / Pilates type bending and contortion that wasn’t easy now that muscle tightening had well set in…

Long hot shower was bliss and helped to loosen the muscles again - but not to such a point that it was possible to reattire myself in the cubicle… and retain dignity…

Shuffle back to the tent, open bottle of cold beer - heaven… try to find somewhere open for food - all closing - try to find take away - all closing - all hampered by the inability to remain awake while staring at our phones…

Gave up, after realising I’d nodded off about 4 times looking at the same search on my phone…

Went to bed - woke up following morning to see my beer, barely touched on the table!

New plan…

Spray remaining contents of travel size deodorant over self to facilitate “squaddie wash”, go for dinner and beers immediately after finishing…

What can possibly go wrong…?

Definitely better to eat out whilst still in central Bornem - last time I was there I had issues just walking the 10 mins back from Sint-Niklaas train station.

Quite how I then managed to get showered, changed and walk the 10 minutes back to the station to take advantage of their Dominos (because I didn’t want to try ordering over the phone in Flemish) is beyond me.

I stayed in a hotel in Temse and ordered a pizza on JustEats to be delivered to me. Only had to walk downstairs

I stayed at home with my feet up with tea and biccys
