Good, quality daysack…

Something that can sit in the mud all day on the range, accompany me on AT, maybe even work as a daily bag. Needs to be strong, good quality and usable for a long time, and a good size suitable for RAFAC activities

I’m thinking about this one, and it has good reviews: 5.11 Tactical Rush 24 2.0 Backpack 37L Multicam | Military Kit

Obvious colour choice would be multicam, but the olive / black one would be less conspicuous if combined with daily civi life for work, AT / whatever. I also like the MOLLE webbing for additional pouches as req.

  1. Would the black / green be acceptable for RAFAC use if I chose the less conspicuous route, over multicam?
  2. Any other recommendations?

Cheers

I don’t see fieldcraft on that list, so why bother with camo if that will just reduce the utility of an expensive bit of kit?

Love my Rush24. I have it in tan (I think they call the shade Kangaroo!) but Ranger Green is also worth a look. To my mind it blends with MTP better than Olive.

I’d not get Multicam, it costs more and for the difference you can always get an MTP cover.

The 24 is quite large (rated at 37L) so depending on your use you might also want to look at the 12.

An alternative, if you want a more conventional strap system rather than the 5.11 yoke is either Direct Action / Helikon or Warrior Assault Systems.

Yes, fieldcraft would also be on that list too!

Berghaus Munro?

They’ve even got a new colour…

I’ve got one of these in grey. When using it in fieldcraft I have an MTP scrim cover from Luminae to cover it up.

It’s great if you don’t need compartments and are happy just stuffing everything in it.

Munro is a great bit of kit (I had one, it did me well) but it’s not MOLLE and having tried the modern clamshell bags I’d not go back to that design for a daysack.

Dragon Supplies do an updated one with MOLLE etc but it is MTP only I think.

Dragon Supplies do a pimped up Munro for about £160 - molle on the front, bulgy mesh pockets on the sides, and a mesh pocket under the lid.

5.11 Kit is generally good, I use their stuff for my SAR kit.

I use a Camelbak Motherlode like this:

I’ve been through loads of rucksacks over the years and this can probably do 99% of what you want really well.

I have a Motherload too (an older version to that shown), an exellent piece of kit; I also have a Hawg for lighter kit days.

For the sake of colour, they have the expensive one on eBay, but they have cheaper colours:

When I was young enough to have to carry weight for the Nijmegen Marches I used a 5.11 Rush 72. A bit large at 55 litres but it did have a nice padded hip belt. Very high quality and lots of nice features but it was heavy. Not a problem as it needed less sand to make up the 10kg. But and this is a big but. I went back to my Highlander Forces 44 as it was a more comfortable bag and better for Road Marching IMO. Not a good quality, cheaper materials and it would only last about 3/4 years but it is a proper rucksack shape and nearly a quarter of the price for a Rush 72.

Motherlodes are great, didn’t include above as non multicam versions aren’t always easy to find, or are expensive.

There is an option from some suppliers to get the Motherlode without the bladder, which saves a bit if you don’t need it.
