Gliding "paused"

i think you have missed the point.

ccw34 was trying to indicate that the Silverback’s comment that all of Wales have at least 130 mile round trip is false given the example ccw34 offered

not suggesting that 600 miles is typical or even the maximum.

Can we not just accept that it’s bad and not get into a bunfight over who has or hasn’t got the biggest journey?

Cherry picking individual examples to prove someone wrong isn’t helpful here.

My Sqn went gliding this week. The escorting staff from my wing his alarm went off at 04:10 and didn’t get back in the house before 21:30. That is a big day by anyone’s account.

If you think this was bad the first pickup was Aberystwyth at 03:30

Yeah… erm… not for me thanks. Not for a few gliding slots!

I’m ex 561, and I remember those early starts for things like annual camp pickups.

It really messes with your energy levels and concentration when looking after cadets. I’m not sure I’d fancy it for a day’s gliding, especially during the summer when the gliding days could be longer.

It’s bad enough doing a 1.45 hour round trip atm.

Was this by service transport or did they have to massively breach drivers hours?

Service transport and the driver would be hung out to dry by the Parent Station for breaking MT rules & regs.

Private vehicle, more fool them. I’m sorry, but that is where someone needs to stand their ground and raise this as a problem.

If they had had a crash either way, would have drop quickly :man_shrugging:t2:

This is the argument we’ve recently had.

We’ve only got a 2 hour journey, but we’re expected to be there for 8, meaning everyone is getting up at 5. If it’s a good flying day, they’ll be there till gone 5pm, and then it’ll be nearly 8 before they’re home.

Not a chance.

But will the VGS listen and change their timings? Nope.

Ask The Team : ACTO 35 Update

For those with access to SharePoint. Somebody has asked a question on ACTO 35.

rather naff response that rather misses the point . . .

So, I have been asked directly to ensure that as some of the info in that reply is sensitive not to disclose it on here verbatim. I’m in contact with someone in the organisation who has asked this to happen (and I trust them), so I have edited/removed some replies. I will, of course, reinstate them once I have confirmation that they aren’t giving out any info.

This is fair enough. It does say quite clearly at the top of the main page:

Users are reminded that the contents of this site are NOT authorised to be shared outside of BADER or on Social Media.

I don’t really think it’s an issue when someone is asking if archery is an approved activity though.

Covid is being used as a ‘get out of jail free’ card by lots of people, huh?

To summarize the response, nothing is going to change in the organisation and if a cadet really wants to fly, point them in the direction of the Army Cadets!

Did you get overtime and TOIL from HQAC.

So what about when we discuss or “share” in the old fashioned way, ie if we just talk to people?

Presumably you’d be talking to someone from within the circle, unless you enjoy telling some rando at the bar in the Con Club the ins and outs of ACTO 48’s latest revision.

On SM it’s public.

As bizarre as it may seem people take an interest and ask what we do and I don’t make it all blue sky with fluffy clouds. I don’t even do this when speaking to prospective cadets and their parents, if they are looking to join they need to know how it is up front. At one time I eulogised about the organisation, but not anymore.

The fact that we have more civvy ‘C’ wings on squadron than Blue, Bronze, Silver and Gold combined got me thinking about a stat that would be impossible to check.

I wonder how many flights cadets do at BGA clubs, outside of cadets and in their own time, compared with how many flights 2FTS carry out in a year?

A quick poll at our squadron puts it at 78 BGA launches to 3 VGS launches.
