Gliding "paused"

I’ve just read the Army Cadets AT manual. They can go gliding just using the BGA. Simples.

Time to look into setting up an AAC capbadged CCF(Army) section again.

I say simple; it does have lots of ‘assurance’ words in it - so albeit it’s only a single page of A4 I suspect there is a little more complication behind it when you try to do it, but on the face of it it’s a lot easier than we are making it.

If you do I’ll join.

There would be a synergy there as one of the AAC’s predecessors is the Glider Pilots Regiment

Erm yeah…

We cant at all

In which case we should scrap the blue and bronze PTS for flying and gliding and just return to the wings for scholarships.

Or, we need to push for more flying opportunities with the BGA again. What’s the latest with it, does anyone know? Wasn’t @MikeJenvey chasing people?

ACTO 35 is shelved again.

It hasn’t ever been “unshelled”. But there was talk a while back that they were investigating what other possibilities we have. Especially now we have found out that the ACF can do it relatively easily.

There was a little bit of hope, but it has been dropped again…

From what I gather TK picked it back up for a look, but it was decided that should anything happen and the question was asked;

“why were you using third party suppliers when you have an in-house solution?”

the answer;

“lack of capacity for our in house solution” wasn’t a good look or acceptable to the CoC… So file ACTO 35 back under B for Bin.

That’s my understanding anyway.

so the CoC acknowledge that what they provide is bad…but they’re solution isn’t to find a solution as it makes the situation look worse! :roll_eyes:

This is just my understanding, I’m not in the meetings so this is not first hand.

I think the preference, probably rightly, is to fix the offering we have… But that is a very long term goal. Is it achievable? Who knows… Will lots of cadets miss out whilst this comes to fruition, yes, thousands will.

There is clearly an appetite to continue to offer a flying experience. The Grob replacement being something electric, to fit the “Astra” vision, is at least an indication that we can expect some sort of powered flying provision beyond the cadet life of the Tutor.

If turning a large organisation around is like turning an ocean liner, then I imagine we are in the situation like that poor little digger first on the scene when the Ever Given got stuck in the Suez Canal… But even that eventually got back on track!

Not quite.

In our scenario the ship is still at max power, churning as hard as possible into the canal side.
We havent even reached the worst yet.

I don’t know, there is a limited provision coming through, better than no prevision like previous years…

I wasnt counting the pause or pandemic.

Supply is reducing to a point of zero dispite.

How can it possibly be that the ACF can arrange gliding, yet we cant.
Arent the risks the same?
I would argue more for them as it’s a non standard activity.

Absolute farce.
We are all one MOD after all.

Commandant and entire HQAC staffing should hang head in shame.

I would give an awful lot to be able to book a load of BGA gliding for the day and take my cadets gliding.

I don’t think it’s quite that bad - e.g. 856 Sqn (2 Welsh Wing) to 632 VGS is a 60 mile round trip (so many of the eastern 2WW units will be similar to this). I agree, not great, but not as bad as you portray :slight_smile:

Yes, no progress sadly. We are so stupid to ignore (ban!) external providers (pre-approved of course).
