Gliding "paused"

Great news from @oc2fts today…plans to get 200 cadets gliding at Syerston this August as long as the airframes are cleared #fingerscrossed

Just seen this on Twitter…

Will wait and see what happens.

As my nans used to say “If, ifs and ands were pots and pans, there’d be no work for tinkers hands”.

Putting this on social media will only get people’s hopes up but 200 will probably only mean those within easy driving distance of Syerston and given 30 days in August only 6 a day. Why can’t people think 3 times before using something like twitter. Putting ‘fingers crossed’ doesn’t inspire any confidence. Imagine the Greek PM twitting ‘loan repayment - fingers crossed’.

Would imagine most of those would come from the 160 cadets on the “aviation camp” at Syerston during August, but the two cleared airframes probably will need some help!?!?

thinking…
4 airframes usable (Probably)
August 31 days
each GIC 1/2 hour
Working day 8 hours (hours of daylight 11)
pilots ?
max number of flight possible 31 days X 8 flight per day X 4 Aircraft =992 flights
take of 25% for crew currency etc still gives 750 ish.
you could get 200 flights from 1 A/C
limiting factors, crew, weather, cdts not turning up, unserviceably of A/C
Perhaps 2FTS is aiming low and anything over 200 will be a bonus
One way to increase the number of cdts flights. Fly for the 6 weeks of the summer holiday. Furthermore our CCF cousins have longer holidays than state school perhaps have the gliding for 8 weeks. Even that would make a theoretical 2000 flights or 400 from 2FTS.

Like your rationale B)

Then when more than 200 are achieved emails etc saying how good are we.

Quote of the year!

Looks like some cadets flew in an ACO glider today! So they might break the 200 mark

Looks like 2016 will be the year of gliding again in the Air Cadets!!!

well it does if you look at the “new” 75th Logo that is being rolled out

see here

that is certainly a Viking in that illustration and does offer potential to fall flat on someone’s face if we’re not gliding!

I have a sneaky suspicion that “Branding HQ” are not in direct touch with 2FTS… :stuck_out_tongue:

Groan

Not that old ‘the next generation’ sh*te again…

I think that it might be time for me to leave - I’m getting rather weary of these little branding attempts. I wish that some of the basics were done better instead.

If that is a Viking …it appears to have had its tailplane removed!

We are starting the process, via the RGO -> 2FTS, to ask for dispensation to use a local gliding centre.

(As per Para 4 of ACTO35; 2FTS are of course the DDH for all cadet flying)

Initial part of the process will be to get 2FTS Form 001 completed (no cadet names required as yet) with relevant details from the gliding centre, then push onwards & upwards…

Here’s hoping for some positive thinking from those that normally say no.

Are the relevant forms on BADER? Time I did the same, I think.

Yup - Controlled Documents > Forms - HERE.

Now, once the provider has been approved, you will need to send a completed 2FTS Form 002 (parental/guardian letter - we did this on sqn headed paper with a brief explanation of why the permission was needed***) + the 2FTS Form 001 for EACH cadet up the chain! I did suggest that a composite list as an annex to one copy of the 2FTS Form 001, but don’t think that has hit the “common sense” switch yet…

If it is a flying club on the approved (CAA) list = much easier (although the pilots had to be DBS checked - they were already). The admin nightmare for a non-approved organisation doesn’t bear thinking about - the choice of aircraft, choice of pilots, flt hrs, whatever, has the potential for a myriad of permutations depending on who was going to be available on what day. Again, I suggested a composite list, but again, no answer.

*** = brief explanation:

Interesting turn of events to over come one of the “flying” issue…

Mmmmmmm :frowning: not too sure I’m keen on this tbh.

Civil pilots are not as restricted on weather, parachute or LSJ sizes etc. there is a simple solution though, ease the restrictions on AEFs given by HQAC and FTS and let’s crack on as before. Most AEF pilots have thousands of hours in military aircraft. Many gaining the rank of Sqn Ldr or Wg Cdr however they are now letting cadets fly in civilian flown aircraft where the pilots may not be as experienced.

Just my thoughts.
