Flight Identifiers

An ACO friend of mine has asked me about flight identification items being worn, either rank slide related or behind the beret badge. Gut feeling was “no” - I was sure I’d seen a prohibition in dress regs - but on looking for a reference in AP 1358C (and even the old ACAI 204) I couldn’t find one.

Can anyone shed any light?

Hi alan,

The simple answer is no they’re not allowed.

The ruling being that if they’re not mentioned in AP1358c, you can’t wear them.

Some people ignore this and do wear them, plus a number of other weird things like coloured discs behind beret badges and belts etc, all of which is not permitted.

Personally, I rely on the fact that cadets can remember 1 of 3 letters which they might be - A, B or C. And if they’re C, they’re under training with us, so it becomes even easier! We also publish flight lists so people know which they’re in.

HTH,

pEp

I encourage the wearing of slouch hats by A Flight, because slouch hats are Australian and Australia starts with A.

B Flight are in bearskins, naturally.

I agree 100% with pEp!! its not hard for cadets to know what flight they are in I do know of some Sqns that go OTT with this and have 1 and 2 Flight then the flight split into sections red and blue I find it very odd when you only have 30 or so Cadets on a sqn

We have a flight identifier…

it’s a sheet of paper on the notice board with A & B written on it with a list of cadets in each flight. B)

This needed to be in bigger font.

I would welcome a return to Slouch Hats for RAF personnel. Much more practical in the sun. Not to mention a better welfare option. (Also, the RAAF sky blue ones are sooooo pretty.)

We had these when I was a cadet and they seemed fairly commonplace. Even then I’m sure they weren’t really allowed but no one to the best of my knowledge ever gave a stuff. We had an ex-Rock as a SWO who was extremely hot on drill and dress and he never batted an eyelid and there was no mad scramble to take them off when Wing Staff or the RC came to visit. The only reason they fell out of use was many cadets never returned them and they just went out of use.

It makes me wonder at which point people got so anal about such things, as they don’t do any harm in the grand scheme of things.

They’re just a bit unnecessary.

Being attached to a Wing where the VRT officers seem to be terribly fashion conscious (side hats are sooo last year, dahling), I’ve been desperately trying to get hold of one to wear at Wing events, along with a set of KD for the summer…

A RAAF chap had one at Nijmegen in 2006, he had some ridiculous offers for it. Including US chaps offering everything they had with them. Eventually he raffled it off.
