Nothing like resurrecting a seemingly dead thread (I wonder how busy this thread will be when the New Year’s Resolutions kick in?)
Today was Huanchaco’s first full marathon. The event offered distances of 5k, 10k, 13.1k and 42.2k.
We started on the seafront outside the municipality building (the usual start/finish for any race) then headed northwards along the coast road, through the Totorales Reed beds and then, for some reason only know to God himself, the route took us ON THE DAMN SOFT SAND BEACH for at least one km. Which knackered me.
Following this and a short U-turn back along the road, we then headed straight up a big hill. Which I had to walk part of.
Going along the straight road at the back of the army barracks was a slog, but I know there’d be a water station at the bottom of the Cerro de la Virgen. When I got there, however, they’d run out of water and now the sun was fully blasting down on us (UV index of 14 today).
A short hop through a Favella later, we’d reached the church and went careering down the hill. None of the roads were closed, but I was pushing it so I went straight through the junction at the bottom just hoping to heaven that no buses were coming at the same time. A left turn, a sprint finish, job done.
Mixed views on the time. Of course it was slower than my last 10k, which took place in the UK. However, the route went over soft sand, dusty trails and I had to walk… and I still finished in 49:54! By rights, I should have been over an hour.
I know what I need more of now, at least; hill reps and beach runs for the foreseeable!
