Looking forward to my NYD parkrun, hopefully cadet activities don’t keep me from reaching 50 and finally justfying getting a red shirt and a shoutout from the RD.
@AlexCorbin - depends if your planning on road running or trail?
I like my Brooks Caldera they were sold to me as a good 50 road running/50 trail running shoe, but the website makes them look more like a trail running shoe
Genuinely, go visit a local independent running shop and have them take a look at your feet and legs. Order/buy through them if you can too - these people tend to be absolute experts. Avoid the big chains like SportsDirect etc, as their staff are generalists rather than running specialists.
I’ve written the below assuming you’re searching for road running shoes, rather than trail or mud shoes.
If you have wide or flat feet (I do) it’s worth specifically asking for shoes with a 4E width, else you risk getting blisters under your arches. For me, even “wide fit” shoes aren’t wide enough, so I have to have the 4Es.
The shop staff should recommend either neutral or stability shoes. If your foot rolls inwards as you run, you’ll be recommended stability shoes, which help to prevent injury for overpronation.
Avoid zero-drop (the drop from heel to toe) or barefoot shoes, as these can cause injuries if you’re not used to them.
I’ve had Nike’s, Brooks and several other brands before. I currently have New Balance shoes and they’re my favourite so far, but everyone has different needs so they may not work for you.
Don’t forget to get some decent running socks too. I run in MoreMile socks and absolutely recommend them. They’re available on Amazon pretty cheaply.
Can I check; have you done much running before? I can also point you in the right direction of some good starter plans if you haven’t.
Got to half marathon length during lockdown 1 (just the once though it scared me off ) on some cheapo addidas. Basically starting from the couch again though
Looking at where im going theres an Asics outlet with the foot laser thingymaboby so toying with the idea of giving that a go.
Having a gait analysis (the laser thingymabob) is no bad thing and a good place to start. Being an Asics outlet, they will only recommend Asics shoes - not a brand I’ve ever personally tried, but I’ve heard good things.
Out of curiosity, what was it that scared you about the HM distance? Did you just jump up to it a bit too quickly?
Can’t recommend this enough. Worth every penny getting shoes that fit you correctly and suit your running style.
There’s a running show on at the NEC in Birmingham in a few weeks, I think it’s only £10 or so to get in. Might be able to get a decent deal on some shoes, that’s my plan anyway.
The general rule is, once you’ve re-done your C25K, increase mileage by no more than 10% per week each week.
I’m always going to recommend attending parkrun too, whether running, walking or a combination of both. It’s a good way to meet other people doing the same thing and be surrounded by people who can keep you motivated - especially if you join in early Jan, when everyone is doing their NY resolutions. I’ve made some great friends through parkrun and my running club (parkrun came first).
I managed to get some SealSkinz from Sport Pursuit. They only really last for one season though.
Instead we now use Viking sport socks (of various breeds given the weather conditions on the day) but broadly accept we’re going to end up with wet feet. However, they are really good, durable and cope with the wet without detriment to my feet.
They’re also available through SportPursuit. And they have some compression ones too.
