First Aid

How do you get the GREEN first aid badge? I already have the red one and was wondering how I could get a green one. What does the green one entitle me to do? I know it allows me to teach First aid but does it allow me to give out the RED badges?

The green first aid badge is a more indepth course than the red one. It will be the equivalent of first aid at work (or emergency first aid at work, I forget which).

To get the green one you’ll need to do the green course. I think it allows you to assess the people doing the red badge course too?

I think the standard applied across the Corps varies on this one.

The green badge indicates that the holder has completed a full, assessed, adult first aid qualification. The base qualification for this is the SJA Activity First Aid course (It is an SJA badge) but some have earned it by doing an HSE First Aid at Work course (maybe through SJA, maybe through another organisation)

If cadets have the green badge and are Instructor Cadets they may deliver or assess Youth First Aid.

Details are in ACTO 8 but ICBA checking just now

Green badge is for completing an SJA (only) adult first aid course e.g. Activity FA or FAW of at least 16 hours. Note the Emergency FAW (1 day course) does not qualify for the green badge.

There is a cadet in my squadron who has informed me that he is a member of the St John Ambulance cadets. I have looked into the activity FA course and he says that he has covered everything in the course extensively during ‘training’ nights in the past 5 years as a cadet in SJA. He assures me that his cadet leader could back him up on this whether this be a phone call or a formal letter.

I am now unsure on what to do, as this cadet is refusing to go on the Activity FA course as it is a waste of time as he has already learnt everything in the course. He is reluctant to do the FAW course as it is very time consuming and he still goes to school. I really want him to get his green badge and he has been put down for the next MOI course so he can start teaching cadets first-aid at the squadron.

So…Is there an easier way for us to get him a green FA badge???

A phone call to your Wing First Aid Office will sort this one out thats what he is paid for.

Mind you ifhe has already done this for 5years what is his problem he should be ableto pass the 10minute assesment.

FAW still requires a requal every 3 years.

I did a combat medical course and Battle Field Casualty Drills Instructor.Basic Life Saving Instructor but still have to pass my FAW every 3 years

I am by no means a first aid training guru, but since the badges are awarded for completion of a St John’s Ambulance accredited course perhaps it could be a simple matter of speaking to his SJA Cadets instructor and asking him or her?
If someone there can say “Yes, in my capacity as ‘xyz assessor’ I confirm that Bloggs has achieved all that” then surely that’s the appropriate box ticked?

What’s wrong with just redoing it? If he has already done it, he should pass with flying colours.

Like one of the posters above, I hold higher/other medic quals but I am always putting myself forward for First Aid courses even if my current one is still valid.

This also helps against skill fade.
You can always learn more, or remember things you have forgotten.

First Aid is a good course for all to have but it changed and updates. There’s no excuse for the cadet not to do it.

Plus, I don’t know how this would work, but if he got something wrong in a real world scenario and they look to your Sqn for his training, would it be your Sqn or his St. John’s that would cover him?

Not sure if I have worded that last bit correctly.
