Emergency location - What3Words

Careful what you wish for, before you know it the whole form will change and the Shooters will be complaining about a change in the form for no apparent reason :man_shrugging:t2:

I took it to be a fieldcraft EASP?

Who gets lost shooting?

Hey! I resemble that remark!

Depending on type of satnag / Google maps, whatever, our sqn postcode shows as located about 100m away from the building. I’ve used W3W on the RAMs (or whatever they are called this month) for quite a while. On Range Orders too for notification of emergency services.

Makes perfect sense, hell my house doesn’t show up on some SatNavs

Another interesting article about W3W, based on quotes from Mountain Rescue England and Wales. It’s similar to our discussions, but definitely doesn’t encourage me to use W3W or to teach cadets about it.

I’d rather teach them about it - and it’s limitations - than let them think they know better and use it wholesale.

We found another one the other day when teaching it. The iPhone version of Google Maps is nowhere near as good as the Android one, it’s not possible to copy a locations’ lat/long in the app, to paste it elsewhere. The Android functionality between the apps is far better.

FTFY

Also just come across this on Facebook:

Link is not safe for work/young eyes, but posting as it's relevant and pretty entertaining.

A more entertaining version of W3W

I like that, four words, from a set dictionary, which minimises spelling errors, as the words are all known.

Hilarious.

Will use that for first class next week :+1::+1::+1::+1:

This evening I asked the new cadets what the address of the squadron was. Only one knew the road name. At least w3w might be helpful most of the time!

So basically cadets can’t navigate without a mobile phone, not very intuitive relying on technology all the time. Wow is another opportunity for someone to make money fir a system that the professionals say us unreliable

Or they are children who get driven somewhere. 🤷

So parents can’t even read a map it gets worse

Who said that?

Coastguard fir starters

Not seen that reference. And regardless, cadets not being able to navigate isn’t the fault of an app.
