Job Description - Job Title: Avionics and Mission Systems Engineer (Level 5)

Purpose:
The Avionics and Mission Systems Team within the Air Vehicles Group, Air and Weapons Systems Department (AWSD) undertake work in support of research and acquisition of manned and unmanned air platforms. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership of Dstl avionics and mission systems activities covering research, development and acceptance in support of a wide range of UK military aircraft.

Reports to: Avionics and Mission Systems Team Leader (Air Weapons and System Department)

Accountabilities:
• Support the provision of independent assessments of avionic systems safety, maintaining close liaison with the Military Airworthiness Authority and DE&S.
• Support MOD air vehicle safety review fora, and provide specialist advice to military and civilian personnel at all levels within the MOD.
• Provide independent advice and assessment of avionic system development options.
• Provide subject matter expertise and technical leadership of mission systems related projects.
• Influence the strategic direction and integration of Dstl and industry programmes.
• Understand, communicate and mitigate system integration issues & risks.
• Support the technical management of industry research programmes in conjunction with the Dstl Programme Delivery Directorate. Identify technology gaps, opportunities, technical challenges, and linkages.
• Work with the UK military, multiple UK industry primes, DE&S, international industry and defence agencies, academia, and the Programme Delivery Directorate as required.
• Develop Statements of Requirements for future research programmes, Business Cases for funding, working with Government and Industry commercial teams.
• Work with Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and Dstl Programme Delivery Directorate to establish exploitation opportunities including identifying barriers to exploitation (both technical and non-technical). Develop programmes of work to overcome such barriers.

Job Dimensions:
The successful candidate will support the Air and Weapon System Department’s capability to assess complex avionic systems in the context of UK Duty of Care and Rules of Engagement for external MOD Stakeholders. The successful candidate will take on technical leadership and contribution to a range of systems engineering / systems integration projects. This post requires timely delivery of technical leadership and contribution to work on behalf of customers and stakeholders, both internal and external, including Dstl Programme Delivery Directorate, Defence Equipment & Support and Heads of Capability in Front-Line Commands.

Key Performance Indicators:
Performance in this role will be assessed within the Dstl Performance Management process. You will be expected to:
• Deliver high quality outputs in a timely fashion;
• Work effectively in a Team environment;
• Be able to work independently, when necessary, and support the delivery of complex multi-player programmes;
• Build and maintain effective networks across Dstl and the stakeholder community, nationally and internationally.

More specifically:
• Support the strategic / technical leadership of Dstl avionics systems support to Lightning II acceptance activities.
• Provide strategic and tactical advice on future Unmanned Air System avionics architecture development, supporting research and development programmes, technology demonstrator programmes and UK industrial positioning.

Internal: Team Members, Project / Programme Managers, Wider Dstl Organisation.
External: MOD customers, MAA, Military, Industry, Academia and International Government agencies.

Working conditions: Based at Dstl Portsdown West, with occasional travel within the UK and abroad.

• Proven track record of successfully working in an avionic systems engineering discipline.
• Experience of avionic system requirements definition, testing, and verification.
• Understanding of military aircraft operations or military systems.

Desirable:
• Understanding of Technical Approval / Design Signatory process.
• Understanding of Military Airworthiness
• Involvement in aircraft mission systems / avionics research.

Qualification(s)
Essential: Degree level qualification or equivalent in a scientific, engineering or mathematics discipline.
Desirable: Degree level qualification in systems engineering, avionics engineering or software engineering.
