Although the concept of trying to split BASIC up into modules with varying requirements is essentially sound, the draft policy as published is still quite far from a sensible, measured plan.
The focus needs to be on the target audience as a primary consideration. Those audiences then need to receive the mandated, relevant modules.
The needs of a prospective staff cadet differ from those of a CI, for instance. New uniformed staff need to look at additional aspects but those specifically fit better into a pre-uniform course rather than an annex to BASIC.
I see this as a good starting point with some sensible suggestions but there is still work to be done and I doubt that some parts of the ACO will be able to deliver this as “mandated” within a reasonable timeframe.
Hmmm call me a cynic but these things seem to come along like govt leaks, ie we’re thinking of this, well ahead of an actual policy, to gauge reaction from somewhere like ACC.
The biggest problem is delivery on a timely and enough of basis. These should be run at least quarterly to ensure that people are able to attend when they need to. I’ve had a couple of 18 year olds get into bother as they missed one that was in plenty of time and got on the next 6 months later which was cutting it a bit close.
This makes no sense
I would have thought that the minimum is well suited to self study with a Q&A session
You are better off attending a course rather than some e-learning package. I’ve done things both ways at work and sitting in front of a PC (especially if it is a purely online affair) is a pain. I started an e learning course but as it was painfully slow I did a proper course over 2 days and did all the elearning course entailed and some more. Also going on a course means you do this old-fashioned thing and talk to real people and in doing so share knowledge and experience(s), sitting on a PC doing learning courses is the route for saddos and “Billy no mates”.
If they were clever enough the bits mentioned in the refresher could have the protecting information drudge on Ultilearn incorporated and kill 2 birds with one stone in one day. It wouldn’t be a pretty day. It is bizarre that PI isn’t mentioned, when it’s relevant to all. Do this and it makes it all more relevant and pertinent as there are aspects of CP that has huge implications wrt PI, which the CPO should be well aware of and include in their spiel.
The fitness thing is lifted IIRC directly from the old DofE physical.
