DofE Gold - Who Presents

I can’t help but notice that last time around Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards were handed out by Commandant Air Cadets, seemingly Alex Jones is doing it this time around, or at least will be present.

One recruiting thing for the DofE scheme and indeed ATC, is that you get gold, you get to the palace to meet a Royal, does this still happen?

The visiting Royal (usually DofE or Earl of Wessex) will come around and talk to the groups of young people (15 or so) for a few minutes and then move onto the next group in the room and so on.

When they leave the room the special guest will hand out the awards. It was Comdt AC last month and can literally be anyone from TV/Sport etc

Its a great day!

I received my Gold back in 2004 at Holyrood, the Duke of Edinburgh came round each group in turn for a chat but the actual certificates were presented by an assortment of minor celebs.

Was a St James’ earlier this year as Special Region Guest and, yes, it the case of someone ‘famous’ presenting the award, then HRH comes around for a chat.

I wonder if anyone has notice the dress amendment for ACO cadets!!! From now, only LLCs can wear No.1 uniform at the presentation; all other CWOs are to wear jumpers, etc…

What, does it officially say exactly that? At that specific event, only LLCs can wear No1s?

But doesn’t AP1358C include a general dispensation for a Cadet’s CO to recommend that they wear No1s at special events, irrespective of rank?? Or is that incorrect…?

Extract from HQAC letter to Wing’s confirming award of gold DofE -

[i]In the meantime the cadets are permitted to wear the “Gold Award” badge on ATC uniform. Record books (where applicable) will be returned and badges/brooches will be sent out.

Attendance at Gold Award Receptions should be in uniform and Wings are requested to ensure that both uniform and cadet are a credit to the Corps.

The dress code is Wedgewood Blue shirt, tie, trousers/skirts.
Lord Lieutenants Cadets only are permitted to wear No 1 Dress.

That is discrimination to the other cadets that are not LLCs, very few get that opportunity, more are able to complete gold. On this occasion all cadets should be same IMHO this is an occasion where uniformity is relevant.

I kind of agree: the LLCs aren’t there in that capacity and should therefore be in No2 dress like the others.

Having attended a GAP where all the recipients were ATC Cadet fairly recently! I agree with that comment. All the cadets should be in the same order of dress! I was amazed at the number of serving cadets I chatted to that had chosen to attend in suits or dresses and not uniform at all!
