That’s a genuine shame

It is, especially considering that the motto is (was) donkeys years old, and again borrowed partly from the now defunct RAF Station… but it was worth the little sacrifice for a badge that on balance brings us closer to it.

As I say, you can’t have it all.

Makes me think I should have requested “don’t fear the reaper” instead of what I opted for.

We actually got funding for ours from the town council along with permission to use elements of their coat of arms. We have something that truly represents the town and its history and therefore gives good identity to the squadron. I have a full spiel about it as there’s also symmetry with the imagery, our motto, and the 3 aims.

I thought John Tunesi was pretty helpful and a nice chap. We had the chance to say no at any point and ask for changes, but his research was beyond what I knew at that point.

The painting hangs with pride and we converted the scan to even higher res jpg, png, and vector graphic. I actually really like using those as the images look better than a standard digital graphic.

There are certain traditional elements they want, things they don’t want (some very understandably, others because they’ve been done more times than a tribal tattoo in 2006), and other elements are in or out based on a design aesthetic. I don’t think the guidelines are really that restrictive…

Oh, you have a typhoon in your crest - is there a Squadron nearby? Do you share a Sqn number with them? Any other link? No? Then how does it represent your unit?

For us the change from fear to brave meant the motto lost all context… And in fact completely changed the meaning of the motto entirely.

In danger of giving my identity up, but It was “Fear the Tempest” - as the Hawker Tempest was based at the station…

Changing to Brave the Tempest suddenly makes little sense, other than to brave a storm… I’m told due to wind shear at the airfield some pilots did meet their end sooner than they should… but it was changed from essentially fear the aircraft and the untold devistation the raf would bring down upon you, to being either brave enough to land or to fly the thing…!

As I say, the badge is fantastic though.

It’s certainly colourful…

Not sure we’re looking at the same badge :joy:

From an independent perspective though “Brave the tempest” is a pretty nice motto. The sentiment “fear this particular RAF aircraft and the destruction it will cause” really doesn’t bear any relation to what we do as RAFAC Sqns.

True,! I guess “Heartstart for All” would work well… :eyes:

You are of course right, and we won’t lose any sleep over it. Just felt a bit of a shame as it was borrowed from the local station which we look after the memorial for… so there is a bit of a link.

Heartstart Omnibus - truly inspiring

And I always thought the omnibus was something you did whilst doing the ironing on a Sunday…

Dual meaning. Two for the price of one. Consider it a motto bargain

The gift that keeps on giving…

xxxx Sqns badge is the worst example of non compliance I have ever seen.

HQAC really needs to enforce the standards written down and in their own brand guidelines.

Gopping and frankly disrespectful not even using the correct circlet template.

Incorrect CMYK
Incorrect font
Doesnt even say Air Training Corps
Laurel wreath is non standard.
Crown incorrect design
Circlet mustn’t be filled in total.
Lightning bolt crosses the circlet.

Just unbelievable.

Hqac should spend 1 day just vetting all 960 sqn badges.
Those that dont comply, should be told to cease using them and submit a new design that meets compliance.

Simples.

Sqns which have spent money on branding or clothing with these designs dont have my sympathy.
The rules are the rules.
It’s inthe brand guidelines for all to see.

No different to anyone who just goes.out and runs an event without permission and causes mayhem.

notwithstanding all the other points, how do you know they didn’t have permission to use a laurel wreathed badge as a base? :man_shrugging:

Because the Corps badge officer (Fg Off John Tunesi) hasnt given that permission.

He never would.
Fact.

Also.
And most importantly.
It is the College of Arms who have the final say on all Official badges and their creation.

100% more truth than anything possible, they would never EVER allow it.
Not in an million years.
Hell would freeze and the moon crash into the Earth before they would.

Any doubters, please call call them tommorow on…

They would laugh themselves silly about it, if they weren’t so dead serious with their work.
