I’m a younger cadet (although I am about the 3rd oldest CDT and I’ve been there joint 2nd longest) and (although not confirmed) we all believe that our sqn is looking for a new cpl as our senior cadet Sargent is leaving along with our senior cpl, I would like to become an NCO and I have asked my CI about what I need to do to become a cpl, and she said that I was doing great and to just try and take control of the cadets, our sqn doesn’t ask NCO’s who would be a good NCO neither do they do application forms, I’ve also taken parade a couple times as I love drill and my NCO’s trust me to not mess about.
Does anyone have any tips to get promoted?
-also I’m a leading cadet, working on senior and I’m currently doing leadership-
The single biggest piece of advice I can give is this:
Model perfect behaviours and get involved.
Modelling perfect behaviours is about standing still when at attention even when others talk, and always having good uniform / taking pride in your foot drill looking sharp.
Getting involved is about trying to experience as much as possible so you have a broad understanding of the organisation and what is on offer.
You’re progressing well on classification.
The only other thing would be to speak to your staff and say you’d like to help out more by taking on some responsibility, which could be something like the tuck shop, or helping teach some new cadets the more basic, introductory lessons.
Every squadron will have different expectations for their NCOs, but I would expect a potential NCO to be setting an example to younger cadets in terms of uniform and behaviour, and maybe also helping the younger cadets with uniform tips and other general cadet things they might not be familiar with.
Second this. This is a 2025 problem it’s just as import t to do stuff outside cadets as it is to do j side cadets (& sometimes is the deciding factor on promotion boards)
