More chance of that happening (and it being effective) than anything external.

Though we have to remember anyone high enough to get that close to him and survive after is likely to be just as bad
The question is who follows Putin? Another Cold War throwback or someone a bit more sensible?
Whoever they are they won’t have been in power for 20 odd years & so will be the new boy in the powers club.
