Following a discussion this evening, curious as to who has an application process for Cadet NCOs versus promotions purely on merit.

The option doesn’t exist, but we do applications for all and interview for FS posts.
We have an exception that if we promote again within 12 months into a rank someone (or multiple) were unsuccessful for, we don’t repeat the process and promote on merit based against progress since being rejected.
This tends to be a case of either “we could have promoted more, but not all were ready” or “we didn’t have enough slots, but one opened up”.
It doesn’t really affect the next batch of candidates too much (for anyone wondering if it means some that didn’t apply miss out), because of timing with intake schedule and leavers at the top.
Up to Sgt based on merit, FS and CWO by application and board.
The majority of our NCOs bang out at Sgt, especially as hardly anyone wants to stay post 18 now.
So for FS it would be a discussion with the OC, as much about whether they want the role as whether we want to offer it.
By that point I’d hope the staff team would have a fair measure of the cadet’s capabilities.
Up to Sgt on whim. Haven’t seen a FS for some considerable time.
I keep changing it as I try to find the best route for me (consistent even when life is insanely busy).
For cdt cpl, I’m basically setting the baseline of “sets a solid and consistent example and has a breadth of experience”.
If they tick those boxes, I’ll promote them to the rank of cdt cpl to set high standards for everyone else to aspire to and then develop from there.
Also keep changing it to adapt to how the cadets change along side society.
