Bronze wings questions

Hi all,

I’m doing a bronze wings course early next year and was wondering if anyone who has completed it has any tips or anything I need to know before I go.

The Bronze Wings course comprises of:

Revision of:

  • Aircraft axis & movements
  • Control surfaces
  • Primary effects of controls

Then goes on to cover:

  • Secondary effects of controls
  • Transitions between descent, straight & level and climb
  • Stalling
  • The circuit.

All of which I already teach to cadets on squadron as part of our in-house flight sim syllabus :man_facepalming:

Well done?

Don’t be a :hammer_and_wrench:

He’s just pointing out that many CFAV (including myself) cover the “basics’“ of flight training and its ridiculous that awarding these badges are gatekept by 2FTS.

Even the Blue ATP needs a 1/2 day train the trainer course where (for example) im a PPL Examiner in the real world.

If there are some external qualifications that HQAC recognise (ie Doctors and First Aid) there should be something similar for Aviation Syllabus

I’m guessing you’re not a 8,500hr commercial pilot with TRI and TRE, who has been told they can’t teach the 1 day bronze wings on sqn because you don’t have the necessary RAFAC qualifications.

To get said qualifications, I am required to go on a course run by somebody who’s day job is within the NHS.

Similar (think I have about 11,000 hrs in total?), but without the trg status!

I’m always a bit on the fence with these things. Even if you have someone who’s very qualified and competent, the train the trainer courses are to make sure that there’s consistency with what’s being delivered across the organisation.

It’s not saying you don’t know what you’re doing, the course is to make sure that as trainers you understand what the aim of each level is and what needs to be achieved.

I’ve seen many examples where those who know what they’re doing can’t actually deliver the RAFAC aims of a course, as they just teach what they would normally.

A specific example being someone with a full UK ham radio licence with airborne experience and all the bells and whistles trying to deliver blue comms, and just confusing cadets with far, far too much excessive information. As they fail to understand what the course is actually trying to achieve.

All of which is a set of aims and notes emailed out to the prospective instructor, who replies with a ‘received, read and understood’ email.

In theory, there should be sufficient detail in the policy and supporting resources so that it’s clear what needs to be delivered.

I think train the trainer courses should focus more on instructional techniques etc, which I think is where we often fall down.

but that is down to personal diligence and discipline - going on a 1/2 day course doesn’t stop that - only their knowledge that they know better….

….some CFAV simply like showing off they know more than most and so will always add to the subject whether it is necessary, appropriate or suitable or not!

:100: this.

I set up an HF ‘phone patch on one freq to call the person in the other pilot’s side on a C130…. SELCAL activated, they answered - & spoke to me only about 3 ft away!

Back to Bronze Wings - if the syllabus / aims are clearly outlined with good presentation / guidance notes, I suspect that most senior cadets with solid flt sim knowledge / experience could run through it without difficulty, never mind a qual’d pilot.

In CE region there are just 2 cadets who are qualified bronze wings instructors. Both are CWO, flight staff cadet, gold wings (glider G2 /ACPS). It took 2 days for them to qualify: one day training, one day delivering the course to cadets under supervision.

Surely all the QAI’s could teach bronze wings….oh, hang on a minute.
