Bouldering Qualifications

Hello AT types please can anyone help with staff quals needed/process for bouldering at a sqn building. Part of our 5 year plan to add a wall but need to see if feasible in RAFAC. Will reach out to Wing AT Officer but I know they’re multihatting currently. Any signposting or advice welcomed

Mountain Training UK are the ones that lead on this. Up until recently you needed to hold the Climbing Wall Award (Climbing Wall Instructor), which if you only ever wanted to boulder, was a hell of a lot of work.

They have however introduced a new Bouldering Wall Instructor qual to fill this gap. It’s very new though, so I know little about it. Have a look on MTUKs website and it’ll have all the details.

Slightly off topic, but at all the big climbing chains (like clip n climb), do all their instructors hold quals?! Seems a little far fetched

Often not, no. They use site specific sign offs.

Normally an MIC or similar can come in and run internal training that’s fine for the specific walls insurer. But they’ll often work towards something like CWA longer term.

(Outside cadets) You don’t actually need anything to run AT in general (for adults). But you’d be silly not to have insurance, and different insurance companies will have different levels of suitability qualified.

For us, the MoD issues specific in wanting NGB qualifications, and honestly, I agree.

Thank you! I will check it out. I was worried that it would be a case of needing a big qual for a simpler use like most things!
