Booking a room in the mess

How does one go about it? There’s a function I’ve been invited to at an RAF station a fair distance from me, so I was hoping to travel up the night before and stay in the officers’ mess.

Do I book it directly or do I need to go through wing? Am I even allowed to?

TIA

my experience of such things - both as a regular and now a civvy - is that its best to just ring up the Mess concerned and speak to them.

some are snotty, some won’t have room, and some are happy for all to join in. personally i’d take the view that if they give it ‘we’re not having @#*%%$£ VR(T) in our Mess’ then i’d assume they’d sent the invitation to to the wrong address, and save my beer and petrol tokens for where they’re wanted…

i don’t see it as being a matter for your CoC, unless you’re being invited to represent them, in which case its their job to sort out your accommodation - and a travelodge on an industrial estate 50 miles from where you need to be is not the correct, or even an acceptable, answer.

In my experience I tend to just phone the booking cell for the station concerned and say “hello it’s Flt Lt daws@1159 I’m attending a function on X would it be possible to book a room in the mess/transit accommodation” never had an issue.

No, you don’t go through Wing - it’s nothing to do with them.

My information might be a few years out of date, but I don’t think it’s changed since I last had to do it: As Daws says; book through the station accommodation cell.

Actually did it yesterday for a couple of rooms. Phoned them up, booked the rooms, confirmed by email; they will want name, rank serial number.

depends on which station, North Holt you have to fill out a form and send it to them. Halton has a divvy booking cell, Odiham ring the respective mess and ask. Be aware that a room for a "social"often attracts a different mess fee that varies from station to station

I’ve never had to do a form to book Northolt, I just ring the booking cell. (Although it’s usually so busy that I end up in the Jet Block)
