It’s a PITA not having a Parent Portal or similar - as it stands, the only way to do things is for a parent / cadet to share Cadet Portal log-on details.
If cadets don’t share, if they are away on an activity & parents / guardians need to contact the OIC, no access to JIs, contacts details, etc.
I agree, even with prior knowledge of the org it has been disorienting for me trying to support my girls starting out. The information coming from the squadron is lacklustre which I appreciate may not be the case everywhere but honestly even seeing the girls Bader acct some of the available information could be communicated much better.
It can be a hard balance to get right between helping the cadet to develop as a young adult and take on responsibility for their own admin, and keeping parents informed.
I lean towards the former, I’ve experienced more than a few parents who want to relive their time as a Cadet through their kids (never enough to become a CFAV of course!)
As briefed in the Town Hall last Weds, a parent portal is on the development list. No timescales but they did brief they are getting additional full-time developers and doubling the volunteer software development team, so there is hope! Link to the recording here - Digital Town Hall
A delicate balance indeed,I lean that way also. Is parents wanting to relive their time common in your experience? I wonder why they don’t make that jump to CFAV if it still interests them.
Different setting I know but at work, having a centralised repository for information and communication has definitely helped us to reduce the time we spend actively communicating individually about minor queries and questions with parents/ guardians and allowed us to focus on other things.
The knock on effect has been mostly positive for everyone, in that p/g’s aren’t seen by students as being as overtly involved so they still get the chance to develop independence, whilst also keeping p/g’s as informed as their individual parenting style needs because moderation of their access to information is on them.
There seems to be the need for an initial “running in” period before cadets manage their Cadet Portal experience versus inane questions from parents / guardians!
Then, the ability for a cadet to be more independent increases - but as previously mentioned, it’s the information gap between cadets / parents / guardians that can be an issue. Luckily, there aren’t too many “tiger” parents - they are hard to deal with at times.
They are specifically asking for 35 hours paid volunteering leave. I’d honestly be happy if it was mandated that a business is required to give a week’s unpaid volunteer leave as a minimum, but encourage paid leave. It would have less of a cost to business but would be a massive benefit to the likes of us.
35 hours paid leave would be excellent, but honestly, businesses are being asked quire a lot of recently, so the Gov does need to be careful how far to push it.
It is interesting how much it varies. Until recently ours was 2 paid days a year for everyone, and 5 for public services (including CFAVs), but has now gone up to 5 and 10, respectively.
It’s good to read the public service leave policy carefully because sometimes it’s written to cover cadet forces too.
Ive seen one or two tiktok accounts from the sea cadets. Are they allowed to have accounts? Even if RAFAC allowed us to have an account, there is no way I’d let ours have one…I’m still cringing from the account I saw last night
