The ‘Are you on Target’ project appears to be rolling out slowly. I have been tasked to deliver it on unit and was wondering if anyone had produced a version which wasn’t already coloured in? My plan was to give blank ones to the cadets so they could colour in themselves what they had done and what subsequently do in the future.
It’s the next step of that procedure. I think it originated in Thames Valley Wing.
This is an example on Bader, but I want one that isn’t coloured in.
There are several different versions. The one I’m building has 15 segments, with each circle building outwards as the cadet progresses. (i.e. the innermost circle is first class, outermost is Instructor etc…)
My boss’s plan is to issue one to each cadet, get them to colour in what they have done already and then we will stick them all up on our large blank wall to assess how we are doing.
There used to be a version on thames valleys website that did that for you…
Never heard of it, though it seems like a good idea and I remember a near-identical training progress card when I was in Cubs, circa 1977!
However, I wouldn’t want to depress the cadets…
Sorry we can’t do that. No trained staff and no practical way to get them qualified.
Sorry we can’t do that. No rifles, range, qualified staff or ammunition.
Sorry we can’t do that. No gliders.
Sorry we can’t do that. Apparently it’s too dangerous.
Sorry we can’t do that. The RAC is over 100 miles away and there’s no budget to get you there. Even if we did, the squadrons who live within ten miles of it have it booked up for the next five years.
Sorry we can’t do that, as there is apparently no budget for us to travel to where the RAF is. You’ll have to move to a squadron that actually has an RAF unit within 150 miles.
GOM, it sounds like you’re thinking of the ‘Arrow’ progress card from Cubs that I remember from the early 80s.

I too was sick of not being able to edit on the computer - so since i could not find the editable one I created one - feel free to use!

Some might see this as negative, but it represents part or all of what many of us experience.
The notion of a progress chart is OK, but you must be able to deliver on all aspects and do so into perpetuity. There would be no point in having a future generation who aren’t able to achieve or do something due to local staff changes or things that go in the Corps that are outside our control. Could you realistically put GIC or GS on something lke this at the moment? Its reintroduction and timetable to what we had before is still purely aspirational if not just a pipedream.
Yes indeed! There was also a target progress chart, though now you come to mention it, I think that was for somethign else in Cubs (or perhaps Scouts later?).
Yes, as GHE says, that is sadly the reality down here at the moment. I don’t want to go promoting the idea to cadets that lots of things are available when they manifestly aren’t. Nevertheless, we’ve managed to double the strength of the squadron in six months and seem to be keeping the cadets interested by our own hard work. It’ll blow their little minds when things like shooting, fieldcraft and gliding become available again!
We use a display board to show what is available across each of the levels. A giant roundel on the board with little strips of further information on the headings, and a picture of what badge you could possibly gain. Saves on individual sheets being printed out
PM me an email and i’ll see if i can get a picture across.
